Umpires are allowed to use discretion and he chose not to. If the kid was hurt or the runner was safe at first then it makes perfect sense.

Considering both of Slaughter's feet hit the bag, it's hard to say he wasn't going for second. But he slid too soon into the SS and I think that's what cost him. I think he was going for second and trying to disrupt the throw but he made the slide too soon and it made it look worse.
