Clearly not, or else Saban would ask for $20 million a year, and he'd get it. He might piss a lot of people off, and lose respect, but he'd get it.

If Nick Saban went to Byrne and said "I want 15M a year"
would Alabama pay him or let him go?

Do you think Nick Saban is worth $15M a year?

If Alabama didn’t pay it every other school in the country would.

I think he is worth at least that, probably closer to $18M.

However, we will see if he flourishes in the NIL era. My gut tells me he will.

He has the infrastructure at Bama that will allow him to get whatever he wants and whoever he wants without any repercussions for cheating. Plus, ESPN, the recruiting sites, and other networks pretty much help him recruit and campaign for the playoff if Bama happens to lose a game for free. It makes no sense for him to go anywhere else now.

So are you going around your elbow to get to your a-hole to say Bama is the GOAT?

He wants a legacy

Lots of good answers here.

Like CrimsonClover mentioned, I'll go with legacy.

Bryant insisted his salary be $1 below that of the school’s president and kept it that way for most of his tenure, because he believed it was symbolically important.

I truly believe Saban sees Bryant's legacy all around him and wants to leave his mark in much the same way (long after he's gone). Whether he would ever admit it, he knows there will be a stadium and roadways named after him, maybe forever.

Asking for an unreasonable amount could tarnish that, and add huge expectations that even he might not be able to match.

He's got all that he could ever need for his family. IMO at this point he wants to be remembered.

Bryant-Saban Stadium. Denny keeps the chimes.

Saban is literally the only coach in the SEC that's earned his salary. The rest should send him Christmas cards thanking him for their ridiculously dumb ADs that foolishly continue to overpay and agree to ridiculous buyout clauses that don't even make any sense.
