Good friend of mine’s dad was on that ‘57 team too. Great group of people.

That is a great story and thanks for sharing it.
It reminded me of this story about Vince Dooley’s ring. It was also missing for a while.

I'm a Bama fan but I've got a non-football story that's almost as amazing as this Auburn ring story. In 1958 I was vacationing in Mexico and had a silver identification bracelet made with my name on it. A year later I was water skiing on Clarke Hill Resivoir near Augusta and lost the bracelet during a fall into the water. The next Monday a girl in my high school class gave back my ring. Her brother had been SCUBA diving in about 20 feet of water on Clark Hill, found the bracelet and knew it was mine. I'm still have the bracelet and still am amamazed at the chances that this happened.

Great story and those older NC/SB rings look much better and classier than the modern rings. They look way too gaudy and over the top.

Thanks and you are so correct about how much classier the older rings look. If Dad's ring looked like championship rings currently do, I wouldn't wear it, but would probably display it like a trophy.

And thanks to the vast majority of you for the very kind responses.

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't heard this story. My Dad's family grew up down the road from Coach Dooley's family in Mobile. Dad was pretty close to Coach. He was Dad's QB coach in 1957. The last time I saw Coach was in 2007 in Auburn at the 50th anniversary reunion.

Great story about your Dad. My dad grew up just across the street from Jimmy Red Phillips in Alexander City. My mother-in Law grew up across the street from and I can’t remember his name right now a guy from Hartselle who was on the team as well.

I was living in Tallahassee and went into a antique/junkstore and saw a stack of old FSU football programs and I got interested and started flipping through them. Low an behold right in the middle of these was a pristine copy of the Auburn vs Houston for 5 bucks! I snatched it up and still have it today.

Another interesting fact is only 3 TD were scored on Auburn all year. They also only played 2 home games. One of those was Florida and when I turned 30 my father gave me his copy from when he attended the game as a Senior in High School. All of Alex City showed up to support Red.

Cut to about 15 years later my sister and I were going through an old hope chest that belonged to my mother. My sister picked up an old scrap book and inside were pictures of my Mom getting autographs from players at the NC awards banquet they threw at Jordan Hare Stadium. In my Moms hand was a Pennant she bought that day as well as a football Program of the Auburn vs Alabama game that she was having the players sign. I looked down in the chest and there was the pennant and program. I snatched them up before my sister could even open her mouth. I can actually say I have 1957 pennant because I have photographic proof. Other than the autographs the program is also in fine condition. How I lucked into these things is beyond me.
