Strange that such an expert would give UGA 6 national titles in their signature when the NCAA website only gives them ONE.

Even Georgia Tech has more mentions than they do.

Which one is Jimmy and which one is Jerry? Were they friends back then?

Jerry is 60, Jimmy 61. They were roommates. I highly recommend SEC Storied Before They Were Cowboys.

One of the best parts is Jerry would go out hustling tickets before games for money. Jimmy say man Jerry I’d like to make some of that money. Jerry says, “Jimmy when you wake up all you think about is football, when I wake up, all I think about is making money.” Obviously it worked out for both.

As far as the National Title that year. Arkansas went undefeated with a win over Texas. Alabama had 1 loss in a bowl game……to Texas. So frick the gumps.

One of those losses… Mississippi State. Who won the SEC.

1941 had to be the only year, in any sport, the last team in the poll claims a title.

11-0 is better than 10-1.

Even Gumps have admit that.

But they have to take one shoe off to figure it out

Both were 10-0 when the AP and Coaches voted.

Legend has it that Bear's nickname for Coach Royal was "Daddy"

Texas and Alabama were both 10-1 after the bowl games.

HELLO!!

ALL recognized by the NCAA and are listed in the Official NCAA Records Book

That's a long list of polls that don't matter.

And the NCAA doesn't have official record books on national champions, they aren't involved in the process at all.

Most of those aren't even polls.

I have no beef with the UPI/AP polls...what Alabama fails to recognize is the fact that during this period (I know, I lived and covered sports during this time), the two service wire polls were not the only major polls and were not the only polls recognized by the NCAA.

You are full of shite because the NCAA has never in history "recognized" anything in regards to national championships.

quote:

Regardless of how the news wire polls were determined, the other polls were also highly recognized and whichever team won the CONSENSUS of all the polls was generally looked upon as the one who more rightly could claim the title. The NCAA allows any school that has been voted #1 in any final poll to claim the national title.

The NCAA does allow any school to claim whatever they want...because once again the NCAA is not involved in the process.

quote:

Hence, Alabama has the right to claim 1964. My beef is that Alabama people don't like to "share" the title and try to claim them as their own. Most national titles are SHARED. Also, Alabama claims some national titles that most schools wouldn't touch w/a 100-ft pole if they were in the same position (exception is Tennessee for 1967 -0- sheesh!).

Aside from 1941, this is bullshite. And 1941 is a math poll only 5 years off the AP. I think it's a bullshite claim, but is not even close to as bad as what many claim - Including 1964 Arkansas.

quote:

Example: 1941 (finished 9-2), 1973 (lost to Notre Dame in bowl game, ND consensus champ), 1978 (lost to USC)

Yeah, it wasn't a problem for the NC to lose a bowl game until Alabama did it. And in 1978, USC went on to lose to a worse team than Alabama. And in the final bowl game, #2 Alabama beat #1 Penn St, while USC played a mediocre Michigan team in the Rose Bowl. I think #3 vs #6 or something.

It's funny people want to ignore USC losing to an unranked team. And if they hadn't forced everyone out of the Rose Bowl, they could have played a better team.

A shared title is where one team wins the AP and another wins the Coaches/UPI. Not just any poll or ranking system.

NCAA does have a list of NCs

Example. They give both of us 1964

Example two. Ole Miss claims 3 but NCAA recognizes 1.

You can’t just claim a title and the NCAA agree

No, they have a website with articles on it, and some editor/writer went and listed stuff.

The NCAA doesn't award a national championship for FBS and isn't involved in it. There is nobody who officially sits there and analyzes what is correct and what isn't, or anything like that. No rules on what counts and what doesn't etc.

We would easily be able to find the rules/guidelines for this if the NCAA was actually involved, such things do not exist.
