The problem is they have played some teams close that other teams ranked in the top 10 have also played close but do not get dinged for.

They've played multiple close games with teams that are going to lose 7-8 games in non-P5 leagues. Like, win in the last 30 seconds games. Tulsa is going to 4-8. Navy is going to go 3-9.
They've played 4 non-P5 teams who are a combined 9-30 the last month and have won by 7, 19, 8 and 17.
That's worse than anybody else in the Top 6 has done. They've gotten more rope than any non-P5 has in the history of the BCS/Playoffs.

This reminds me of 2009, when Cincinnati was undefeated going into the bowl games and ended up playing Florida while Alabama and Texas played for the national title.
Undefeated Cincinnati ended up losing to Florida 51-24 and it was only that close because Florida pulled had 2nd and 3rd string in while up 44-10 to start the 4th quarter.
But they were undefeated PAWL! (Not to mention that version didn't have as many close wins against mediocre to awful teams)
