In a previous era. Dude's washed in this day and age. He's admitted it himself.
I'm not sure which is more depressing:
Actually targeting Mainieri or Mainieri doing Tanner a smokescreen favor to hire Monte fricking Lee

Looks like monte is the winner.
Sc got a big baseball flip immediately after the last guy got fired..

247 UPDATE: I'm working on a front page story but, barring any last minute BOT snags, Paul Mainieri will be the next head coach. I anticipate him bringing in Terry Rooney as his pitching coach. An effort is being made to keep Monte Lee here as well. I do think there is a very good chance of that happening, in this case. But that isn't 100 percent.

damn. South Carolina is really committed to not returning to glory.
Clemson lost their Super Regional, which is all they really care about.

I'm glad to have a fine representative such as yourself to speak for all of us

People also fail to remember that Steve Spurrier was 60 when South Carolina hired him. Lou Holtz was also in his 60s. I'll take a proven winner.
USC's expectations in football are just a tad different than they are in baseball. Y'all expect to be in Omaha routinely and have fired your last two coaches for not doing that. Hiring an old coach 3 years post retirement who used to be great doesn't seem like a great move with that level of expectation
When USC hired Holtz, they were coming off a 1-11 season and hadn't been competitive in nearly 20 years. When they hired Spurrier, USC had gone 5-7, 5-7, 6-5. It's just not the same

PM quit recruiting like someone said above and he even stupidly admitted it. Idk last few seasons made me not like him as much. Then to take a break and go to USC. Hopefully his neck quit bothering him so he doesn't cry on TV.

Pretty baffling hire for USC. Dude was burnt out of the grind by his retirement here and wanted nothing to do with the portal/NIL era coming.
Our friday night starting pitcher for Jay's first year here was a guy who threw 88-90 from the right side and their best pitch was a curveball they threw a ton
He had no idea what a left handed pitcher was by the time he left here.

Mainieri is at least a proven commodity in SEC baseball.
If COVID didn't save his arse, 2020 was going to be a disaster season. 2021 wasn't great either. He was 45-45 in the SEC his last 4 years (3 actually) and got saved by COVID. I bet that team goes 10-20 in the SEC.
He just really didn't have the fire on the recruiting trail at the end and seemed aloof in the dugout. I think someone mentioned his dad passing, and I agree, that impacted him, but he's also just older and burned out.
Maybe he has a new fire in his belly.

just don't see it. Mainieri was, by his own admission, burnt out of coaching at a high profile program when he retired. He pulled his name out of both the Notre Dame and Miami jobs in the last 2 years. He and his wife just built a house a couple of doors down from his daughter. I find it hard to believe South Carolina would actually consider him or that he'd actually get his wife's approval to un-retire and enter another meatgrinder 700+ miles away from his grandchildren at his age. He certainly doesn't need the money either.
Exactly. But why do I feel like he’s
Going to end up doing it?

Mainieri quote from the Rant I am stealing from when he "retired" at LSU:
quote:
"I also felt that it was time to hand the program over to a younger person that had maybe a little more energy and that could do the little things that I always did. I was just running out of gas.
I've coached almost 2,300 games. I've coached over 900 games at LSU. With the expectations as high as they are at LSU, it could wear you down a little bit. I just felt it was the right time."
