All Arkansas best coaches go else where, especially during the Frank Broyles era.
Bear Bryant
Jimmy Johnson
Ken Hatfield

Barry Switzer supposedly was offered the job by Broyles when latter retired. Not that Holtz was a miss, but I think Barry would've fit in better there

The shovel belongs to the shed not the boat.

You have no idea. Went to school with many guys that trawled with their dads or brothers during the summer. When they turned 15 they did two things.
They went get their driver's license and to the car delarship. Take your pick cadillac, lincoln town car or mark four. Maybe one of those big party vans that were the rage in the mid 70's. Could have been a vette. Some just bought the highest end pickup on the lot.
One thing they all did was pay cash.

Bear Bryant was an alumni of Alabama so that was where he always wanted to go. He went to Alabama because Arkansas like now was garbage but for a much longer period. They had no fan support and a lot people were fans of other schools.
Jimmy Johnson wanted to come here but Broyles had the advantage of being his former coach. So he knows him very well. He was at Oklahoma State and after he left, they were put on probation. So Broyles was concerned that he would do the same here. So he passed him for a safer hire in Ken Hatfield.
If Broyles hired Jimmy or Barry then it is a very good chance Arkansas gets put on probation and it would destroy Arkansas while they enter the SEC. The NCAA had balls unlike know and wouldn't hesitate to lay the hammer on any school. Broyles would get blamed and that he should have hired Ken Hatfield instead.

By all accounts he loved his time up here. It might seem odd now... but for a long time Arkansas was the place to go if you were a young coach. There is a reason, after all, why the best assistant coach gets the Broyles Award.

The Broyles coaching tree is huge. Both include national college football champs to NFL Super Bowl winners.

That's a funny story.
That'd be like me going "where the hell is Louisiana?" which would just make me a dumbass.

frick.... After watching that video, it's hard not to like Coach O.... He seems like a genuinely good guy.. Rooting for you guys to have another killer season LSU except when we play you. I hope Bama beats you to within an inch of your programs life..

Amazing so many HC's in the South were born or played there.
It goes even deeper. Monte Kiffin’s Tampa-2 defense was born there while he was DC under Lou Holtz, and Pete Carroll’s defensive philosophy originated at the same time when he was a GA under Kiffin.
