That's what I didn't understand. I haven't seen Deshaun play that tight since his freshman year at FSU.

I was truly surprised they didn't run more screens or move him to help him settle down. He was off the mark all night, presumably because Auburn defenders were in his face a lot.

Auburn played press coverage on the outside... Cut down on the screens at the LOS but made the back shoulder throws a killer.

That MF'er ate us alive last night. Kudos to Clemson for going back to him over and over. Glad we don't have to see him again.

However, whatever that was last night was nowhere near the team we played eight months ago. What percentage of their offense did Clemson return?

It's true of course, it's just the intent of the OP that was obvious.

Clemson would probably have lost to an AU team that did anything half-normal on offense. Our D was fantastic, and really bodes well for the future. But, I have to agree that Clemson looked very, very pedestrian.

Well, it's not like they had a big, top-tier opponent to prepare for.

Some complacency is expected when you play a perennial also-ran like Auburn.

If you can't come prepared for a season opener against a major CFB team, you aren't as good as advertised. Sorry, that's just the way it is. Some teams do play vanilla starting out so they can open the playbook later in the season against important conference opponents, but even a vanilla offense -- in fact, especially a vanilla offense, because you're doing the basic stuff the players learn from Day 1 -- can be executed effectively.

I know you credited AU's defense, but be careful not to give too little credit. As a Bama fan, you should know that a well-executed defense can change an offense's performance and play-calling drastically even when they're not actively in play.
