Dabo Swinney’s new deal at #Clemson is MASSIVE. It will be for 10 years and $93 million, per source ... He has led the Tigers to two of the past three national titles.
I feel like this is going to set an unsustainable precedent. Firstly, Dabo is absolutely worth this money. But it reminds me of the $4M/year deal Saban got that everybody thought was insane. Now you look up and so many program are paying $3-5m to fill the position (not even related to the pedigree of the coach). Not to mention the assistant pool of money that is usually in line with what the HC makes.
Illinois is shelling out $5m/year. NC State is over $3m. Matt Luke would have taken the Ole Miss head job for $150k and a country club membership, but they had to pay him $3m just to keep up with the programs around them.
I know these new tv deals mean lots of distributed money, but $15m+ for a coaching staff for one program is an awful lot. Especially for mid-tier programs

I mean, I dunno if that person even exists.
He doesn’t. That doesn’t mean bama won’t try to find him though. I truly believe Saban is a dying breed that can still get away with the Uber disciplinarian mentality when it comes to head coaching. The only reason is that he started it and embedded into the culture from the beginning.

Lol. No.

Agree. My biggest argument for Dabo (other than his resume) is the idea of bringing in a polar opposite type guy who by nature won't be compared as specifically to Saban on every move as, say, a Saban disciple type might.
But yeah - just have to trust the AD to find the best fit, basically.

You wonder how long this is sustainable. These salaries for a college coach are beyond ridiculous and stupid. In another decade you'll have coordinators making 4-5 million a year.

But don't let them find out a player got a discounted tattoo or that they signed an autograph for $50.

Well they could not go to college and never play a down in the NFL

I think we all agree it's very flawed, but that's how it is and changing it to pay players would be worse.

bullshite. Neither of those those things have anything to do with universities paying players.
Allowing players to profit off their name won't cost the universities a fricking dime.

Imagine being told in America that you can’t profit off your own likeness but someone else can

Imagine most of these top players without college football.

Well no, but I mean have you ever been to Tuscaloosa?
There is nothing there.

They'd be able to sign with pro teams straight out of high school.

Lol so blame the NFL. And no they wouldn't. You realize the NFL only has a certain amount of spots right? The current players would never allow that to happen and they wouldn't make squat without college because there's nothing to base their contract off of.

It's much closer to the home of these players who have barely ever left their home towns.

You realize that without college football, either the NFL would create a minor league or lesser pro league would take major college football's place, right?

Why would the NFL spend money on something they don't need? You're missing a lot of economic concepts here my man.
Posted on 4/26/19 at 10:32 am to pvilleguru
That money is chump change to any SEC team. The SEC network pays out half of that contract to each team every year
Alabama will still go after Dabo
