I think you can argue that they did. They pretty much put southern football on the map by winning the Rose Bowl multiple times.

6-6 only because he lost his 1st year and final 2 when he was dealing with the Ramsey BS, and a medical condition which almost killed him his final year.
He retired 3 Bama coaches in 12 years and mostly dominated the SEC. Bama got extremely lucky Dye did not run off 8 in a row. Only Bo going the wrong way and Van Tiffen's miracle kick saved bama from losing 8 straight to Dye. Not to mention AU won 4 SEC titles under Dye to Bama's 1.
Dye was bama's daddy and changed the balance of power in the state.

Coach Wade paved the way and Coach Thomas and Coach Bryant built Bama to higher standards. Coach Stallings continued this.
Coach Bryant coached during the breaking of the TV and radio coverages. That's when Alabama became more of a national name.
If Wallace Wade had not taken Alabama cross country to the Rose Bowl and brought the Southern teams up from the dark ages, the SEC might not have been what they are now.
Coach Saban came in after Alabama had been through the dark ages and everyone though we would never recover, like SMU. But he brought Bama back to the top and is continuing to hold us there.
Wade, Thomas, Bryant and Stallings are all Hall of Fame coaches. I think Saban will be one in the future.

From a historical perspective I think they did. Take this analogy from the Civil War: the Battle of Gettysburg is without a doubt the most famous battle of that war. But historians will argue that the Battle of Vicksburg or the Battle of Antietam were more strategically important. Bryant is your Gettysburg. What he did was important, yes, but what Frank Thomas and, particularly, Wallace Wade did for Alabama football as well as Southern football, I think you have to put them over the top from a purely historical perspective.
At the end of the day, this much is clear. Had Alabama not hired Wallace Wade, we would not have hired Frank Thomas (it was Wade who recommended Thomas to succeed him in the first place). And, had we not have gotten Thomas, we most certainly would have never gotten Bryant because it was Thomas who went into Arkansas and recruited Bryant to come play football at Alabama. The only reason why he left A&M for Tuscaloosa is because, using his words, "Mama called."

Trivia question:
Who is Auburn's field named after?
A. Coach who led Auburn to an undefeated 11-0 season, its first undefeated season in 36 years and a school record 20 consecutive wins.
B. Coach who led Auburn to its next undefeated season, finishing 13-0 and winning the SEC championship and the Sugar Bowl.
C. Coach who led Auburn to its only BCS championship and school record 14 wins in a season.
D. Drunk retard.

Dye put Auburn on the map. Auburn was the better program in this state from the time Dye got there until Saban arrived.

Dye was 6-6 against Alabama. But you're right, if Auburn had won a couple of those games, his record would be better.
Pat Dye set the standard at Auburn. 9-2 in 1989. That was the "mountaintop"

Actually, AU lost only 1 game in 1983, 1987, and 1988 seasons under Dye.
Two in 1988 if you count the Sugar Bowl loss to FSU on the blown PI call.

He could be in a wheel-chair in some sort of mental institution in the Philippines and Alabama fans would claim that he's still helping Auburn cheat. We don't need him; we have Troop and Luper for that.
expect maybe the Auburn administration

Love that Auburn's time as the better program (dye's arrival to saban's arrival) included only 1 more SEC title than Bama,
and 1 less National Championship

and 1 less National Championship
