I really do have to leave soon, so I found an old post of mine which kind of highlights the schedule's of each team that year:
1983 Nebraska vs ranked teams:
#17 Penn State W 44-6
#18 Oklahoma State W 14-10
#1 Miami L 30-31
1983 Miami vs ranked teams:
#6 Florida L 3-28
#10 Notre Dame W 20-0
#16 West Virginia W 20-3
#2 Nebraska W 31-30
1983 Auburn vs ranked teams
#5 Texas L 7-20
#6 Florida W 28-21
#4 Georgia W 13-7
#12 Alabama W 23-20
#9 Michigan W 9-7
Also played Maryland at the end of the year when they were ranked #7, but they melted down hardcore.

In the case of 1983 it was. You had to look really good there in the bowl season to have any shot at a national championship. You were heavily favored going into that contest, you were shut out in the first half, gaining only 61 total yards. Al Del Greco put you over the top in the second half but you never scored a touchdown.
On the other hand, you had a Miami team who throttled #1 Nebraska for much of the first half before it devolved into a classic thriller in the 4th quarter. I'm not saying Miami was better than Auburn, I'm just saying I understand WHY Miami was voted #1 over Auburn.
Oh I understand why Miami jumped Auburn, I'm just saying it's for all the wrong reasons.
The more objective the methods become for judging national champions, the better they become. That's why the BCS was better than the old polling system and it's why I'm really skeptical of a selection committee in the future.

Dye's comments sound like the typical kiss of death statement of support GMs and ADs give before they drop the hammer down at the end of the season.

I think Diddy's (unspoken) point is that Saban boosting Alabama's legacy by winning here is actually diminishing Auburn's legacy by making it look completely irrelevant by comparison.
Sometimes you just have to know how to cut through his bullshite.

Stop already. No one of today brings up Wallace when speaking of Bama.
I actually bring up Coach Wade rather often. In fairness, though, I am a lot more interested in history in general than the majority of people I talk to.
