The College Football Playoff will go on as scheduled.

That according to the executive director of CFP, Bill Hancock, but he also left the door open a crack.

The plan calls for a national champion to be crowned Jan. 11 “unless the coronavirus pandemic forces a schedule change,” Hancock told ESPN.

The CFP management committee, however, did agree that if a semifinalist is unable to play because of a COVID-19, there will not be a replacement team.

“During a thorough and robust conversation, the CFP management committee today agreed not to place a replacement team in the playoff should a school not be able to field a team because of COVID after Selection Day,” Hancock told ESPN. They also decided that each team will use its conference’s COVID-19 testing protocol in connection with the CFP games.

“The management committee also made clear that the CFP games will be played on the scheduled dates,” he said. “They reserve the right to discuss this again if circumstances change, but our planning is centered on holding the games on their scheduled dates.”

Earlier this week, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott asked the College Football Playoff Management Committee to delay the start of the playoff due to surging COVID-19 numbers across the country.

So if no replacement teams does that mean a delay or a forfeit? Why are they so dead set on keeping the dates so firm, seems completely pig headed and damaging to everyone involved. Isn't flexibility a good thing?

Not sure why they wont use replacement teams. I guess for money payout purposes to those schools?

I am sure dates are firm due to advertising payouts. But got to be a clause for those buying ad time to get their money back if the game is not played.

Not in this case, I think. These spots have to be earned and once set, should not be changed. Just set a date when everyone is ready. No rush to decide a champion once we know who will be playing for it. Just my opinion.

I think the plan right now is for a delay if possible. Can you imagine the uproar if an undefeated Bama or an undefeated OSU was forced to forfeit because they had Covid issues?

Flexibility is a good thing. But I wonder if they worry about conflicting schedules with the venues. I know the Rose Bowl doesn't get a lot (if any) use outside of college football, but the Superdome and Hard Rock Stadium may have other events that would complicate scheduling if the 1st and 11th dates had to be moved.

Good point. I have been advocating for pushing everything back, but hadn't thought about venue availability.

The bigger question is what is the minimum no. of games required to be eligible for the playoffs? For instance, if Ohio St. only completes 2 more games and goes 5-0 should they be in the playoffs?

I don’t know about the hard rock but our dumbass mayor has cancelled everything possible so the superdome should be wide open. It’s not like there’s going to be 60k fans coming, so even if the saints had a home playoff game the day before or the day after you could make it work.

Yeah, people are already pushing for Oregon to be included, yet this is their entire schedule:

So, which team discloses their positive test results and ineligible players that takes them below the miinimum first? That is the team that forfeits.

Don't kid yourself. They simply won't test or they'll instruct the testing facility to run the test with fewer cycles, thus giving fewer positives.

No one is dropping dead from this fake pandemic so they know they can't be sued for putting lives at stake.

The current controversy around cycle threshold (CT) values is actually a fascinating rabbit hole to go down, if anyone is interested in this sort of thing.

One number could help reveal how infectious a COVID-19 patient is.

quote:

Real Time PCR CT Values

What does CT mean?

In a real time PCR assay, a positive reaction is detected by accumulation of a fluorescent signal. The cycle threshold (CT) is defined as the number of cycles required for the fluorescent signal to cross the threshold (i.e. exceeds background level). CT levels are inversely proportional to the amount of target nucleic acid in the sample (i.e. the lower the CT level the greater the amount of target nucleic acid in the sample). Some real time assays undergo 40 cycles of amplification.

CTs < 29 are strong positive reactions indicative of abundant target nucleic acid in the sample
Cts of 30-37 are positive reactions indicative of moderate amounts of target nucleic acid
Cts of 38-40 are weak reactions indicative of minimal amounts of target nucleic acid which could represent an infection state or environmental contamination

In summary, some of these tests are being cycled to huge thresholds, which successively keep looking for more and more faint markers. Some argue that such results aren't true positives for COVID-19, and that there should be a better standard for these tests. That is, if you have it, the test should determine that quickly, and shouldn't have to keep looking and looking.

If the final four teams are:

1. ALabama
2. Ohio State
3. Notre Dame
4. LSU (for fun sakes lol)

And Ohio State and Notre Dame both have COVID issues and cannot play, does that mean Alabama and LSU plays twice or is their semifinal game the National Championship?

When the date the CFP was supposed to occur comes and goes, the phrase "elections have consequences" will have new resonance.

Theyd sweep some covid stuff under the rug for the Semifinalists. Obviously not a full-scale lockerroom breakout but if Justin Fields got contact traced 2 days before kickoff, he'd still play.

It did add the qualifier, "They reserve the right to discuss this again if circumstances change."

Guess that could be interpreted to go both ways?

But based on what they've failed to address so far, it probably won't.

If the committee is not willing to delay games or change the schedule, it could actually be near impossible to replace a team depending on when it is determined that one of the playoff teams can’t play. For instance, if the #4 team learns 3 or 4 days before the semi-final that they have too many guys out due to COVID to be able to play, it would be impossible to just move the #5 team in and ask them to make accommodations to travel and then play a team they haven’t prepared to play.

Moving the #5 team up would also impact whichever bowl game that team was scheduled to play in.

The CFP teams may need to spend Christmas in a bubble. Sad how extreme the virus response has become over the past 8 months in light of the actual data.
