Who knows if this is true? Lots of reason to believe it isn't. We'll see.
As for Herman's failure at Texas, we all know OC is different from HC. He was a successful OC at Ohio State and did a great job at Houston. No reason to think he wouldn't do a good job at LSU as OC. I wouldn't want him for Head Coach, though.

Herman wasn’t disliked because he was somewhere else and successful. He was disliked because he rejected LSU whose fans then made sure to point out how terrible he was at his job after they “dodged that bullet.”
Can you see the difference between the Saban and Brady comparison now, or do I need to chew the food for you too?
