As much as I hate for Ole Miss to have to face this guy again, as he's the only player Tunsil ever struggled at all with, I'm rooting for him to stay healthy and have a good season. This guy has an insane amount of talent and should be a top 10 pick. Just needs to stay healthy.

I badly want to see this kid play a full year healthy.

Honestly, I didn't pay attention to Steele one way or the other until he got to AU. I know his name from SEC banter, but I pay attention to Auburn when it comes to position coaches and coordinators. I know Kiffin and Kirby Smart and some names because they're in the press all the time but most of the school's coordinators I don't know shite about. I couldn't trll you a thing about Florida, or South Carolina or Arky coordinators. Hope Steele does a good job but I didn't know much about him or his style until now after reading up on him.
Basically, if you aint us, I dgaf.

I don't think he is much more than average as a coordinator of a defense, though.
Maybe. But average would still been better than we've been the past 5-6 years. Guys like Monty act like he's mentally retarded. He will be an OK DC and that's all I give a shite about. If Gus doesn't fix the offense it's a moot point anyway.

After two years of Ellis Johnson, most AU fans know it can not get any worse. If WM had stayed, AU would have had a very good Defense next year. If Gus can find a QB, all AU needs is a average Defense. Most think Steele can produce that level with the talent coming back.

I mean, he isn't better than any of the coordinators you have had the last 10 years, I will put it that way.
At best he is about the same as Ellis Johnson and/or Ted Roof. Personally, I think he is probably worse based on their histories elsewhere and his elsewhere, but probably about the same. And you guys ran Ellis Johnson off, so.

Ellis Johnson was a solid defensive coordinator everywhere else he had ever been before he got to Auburn. What makes you think Kevin Steele will be any better than that?

He'll have Carl Lawson.

I mean, that's good, but he has had more knee injuries than sacks the last 2 years, so.........I hope the kid heals all up and things work out for him, but it isn't some sort of given that he will magically return to 2013 Carl Lawson next year (which was a very good player, but didn't dominate the field or anything).
The kid has 5 career sacks. He has 37 career tackles. I get that he is a physical freak, but expecting him to single handily make your defense great is asking a bit much.

Ellis Johnson was solid when he played conventional Offenses (aka Saban/Smart). He never adjusted to the HUNH, even when he was at USC. Remember EJ played Man Defense against Cooper last year.
P.s Lawson did not have a knee injury this year.

Um, have you watched Kevin Steele's defenses at LSU and Clemson play against HUNH and pass spread teams?
2015 LSU
Western Kentucky - 428 yards, 84 plays, 5.1 ypp, 20 pts
Ole Miss - 432 yards, 65 plays, 6.65 ypp, 38 pts
Texas Tech - 399 yards, 82 plays, 4.87 ypp, 27 pts
Clemson 2009 - 2011
2010 North Texas - 462 yards, 83 plays, 5.57 ypp, 10 pts
2010 Auburn - 424 yards, 61 plays, 6.95 ypp, 27 pts
2011 Troy - 423 yards, 78 plays, 5.42 ypp, 19 pts
2011 Auburn - 435 yards, 63 plays, 6.90 ypp, 24 pts
2011 Maryland - 468 yards, 83 plays, 5.64 ypp, 45 pts
2011 West Va - 589 yards, 89 plays, 6.62 ypp, 70 pts

Watching Lawson whip Tunsil the whole first half was awesome. He was tired the second half and played like a shite but it was nice to see his potential when he is actually healthy again.

I don't think any of us think Steele was a good hire. It was a very meh hire but that was to be expected with the way our defenses have struggled and the uncertainty of Gus' future.

Lawson is a tremendous talent with a Glass Joe Physique

Honestly I was just shocked by it. I thought for sure Gus would go out and mine for somebody with a proven track record of being a solid defensive guy along with a spread offense guy from the lower ranks somewhere or something.
I just don't really understand it. It seemed almost like a give up this is to hard lets just get a guy hire.

What HUNH tripped LSU up this year?
Auburn?
A&M?

Did you watch them play Ole Miss? They got run out of the gym. And that was a team that had been recruited and taught for 5 years by Chavis how to stop spread teams. On top of that his teams couldn't stop in the box teams. Arkansas and Alabama bludgeoned them to death.
I mean, I know you are the eternal Auburn apologist and optimist, but if you are seriously excited by this then you are even farther gone than I thought.

I think he went with Steele versus an up and comer for the perception that "we hired away LSU's DC" instead of some guy no one knows. The fact of the matter is next year doesn't hinge on the defense near as much as it does on Gus fixing the offense. Plus if he fixes the offense and Steele gives us a decent defense then we have some long term stability since Steele won't be looking for a HC job.
