Will Wade was summoned to speak to the LSU Board of Supervisors, and responded by lawyering up and refusing to talk. That was career (at LSU) suicide, and there's absolutely no getting around that. Woodward was almost certainly given a mandate to terminate him, at the first possible opening.
He'd have to have Saban/Bertman level success and influence to survive that, and he didn't.

That's putting it mildly. Oats lapped him and was routinely beating the brakes off him.
