Can anyone explain The love fest with [insert 5 star recruit's name here].
All they've done is beat up on high school kids.
Sooooo yeah, maybe people claiming Wilson will be a great QB are being a little overzealous. But it's no different than every other team saying shite like, "so and so is going to step in for our NFL draftee and be great. He was a 5 star!"

So I guess the next question is should playing well in a shootout vs AU's secondary REALLY be a valid measuring stick?
Probably not, if you are going by the quality of the AU secondary. However, what you should look at is the placement of the throws, the delivery etc. in evaluating from that game. He just went out and did what you would expect a good QB to do (minus the late interceptions).
He has done well in the Spring practices, carried it to the Spring game this year, and by all indications that we can have, will do well this fall. Do we have any gaurantee's? No, but from all the evidence available, the odds are very good that he will have an outstanding season.

Were there a lot of players that threw for > 300 yards against Auburn's secondary last season? I honestly don't remember. How many of those players did so after not getting any 1st team reps all season?

Why did you attribute that quote to me?

What has this guy done to gain so much love/respect across the SEC? He is totally unproven
You nailed one reason on the head, the AU game.
Wilson came in just before halftime and went 24/35 for 334 yds, 4 TDs and 2 late INT's. The next week he filled in for a dinged up Mallett against Ole Miss and went 3/5 for 71 yds.
It is not just those two games that most people point to. It is the fact that Wilson was neck and neck with Mallett 2 years ago for the starting spot, as well as leading the team for 2 straight springs as the 1st team QB. He is used to being the #1 guy in this system. He has been in this system for a long time now.
Wilson is a better mover in the pocket with more escapability than Mallett. Couple that with the weapons he has around him and it looks like Wilson could have a great year.

Can anyone explain the LSU obsession with Arkansas?

AU's secondary was awful last year though. I think most AU fans would admit that.

2004 Stefan LeFors 181.7 1
2005 Brian Brohm 166.7 2
2006 Brian Brohm 159.1 9
2009 Ryan Mallett 152.9 8
2010 Ryan Mallett 163.7 7
After Petrino's first years at both schools he has ALWAYS had a qb in the top 10 nationally.

The only qbs to throw for 300 against auburn were McElroy, Wilson, and Darron Thomas.

I will admit that they were not all that great.
My point is when you look at the throws he made in that game, it really does not matter how good of coverage there is. He made great throws on slants, go routes, everything. He made all the throws. Add to that it was on the road in front of nearly 90k opposing fans.
Now, had it happened at home, I am sure some of these national expecations would be a little more tame.
Look at this video for example. He made some exceptional throws and his favorite WR will be back.

I'm assuming you're right on this one, since you actually listed the names. But that is very good company for a second string QB, coming in cold, in a hostile environment, after not getting 1st team reps all season. Not to mention Nick Fairley breathing down your neck.

There are no examples and you are right. Petrino has an unearned reputation from “football people”, like college and NFL coaches, as one of the best at developing QBs. These real experts, you know the ones who actually make a living in the football world, could learn a thing or two from the message board football “expert” who goes by the name roadGator. That makes perfect sense to me……only if you are a fool and a tool.
