IMO he certainly is. The defenses in the SEC are too good and too fast to have someone back there that does not present any running threat. Having a guy like Newton is almost like having 2 offenses one team. You have the playbook and then you have him innovating when the play breaks down. As much as I like Mcelroy he has no option when he is pressured other than to get sacked or throw the ball away.

Guys like Newton don't come around very often. I wouldn't expect to see the SEC littered with fast 6'6", 250lb QBs that are exceptionally elusive.

There are plenty of dual-threat QBs and have been for years. Its not like he is some revolutionary QB we have never seen before.

Not many QB's have his arm strength and speed, though.

This mobile QB experiment is nothing new. A lot of teams have tried this and failed...Brent Schaffer, Kodi Burns, Larry Smith, Syvelle Newton, etc.

True but I think the elusive QB in this league is almost becoming a necessity to have. Having a guy who does not present a running threat is a big help to a defense. Especially when it comes to playing the passing game.

Yes, players with the skill set of Cameron Newton are plentiful.

The only problem is you don't find Cam Newton's year in and year out. Same with Tebow. It might be the future but good luck finding them.

What you might see though is more and more high school coaches keeping the big, fast, skilled guy at QB instead of moving them to DE or LB because of "need".

And if/when that occurs, you WILL see more Pryor's/Newton's/Tebow's available for the college game.

Maybe.

I think there are more guys at the high school level with those abilities playing the QB position now than has been the case in the past. Mcelroy was sacked 8 times against SC. He has no chance to do anything other than get sacked or throw the ball away when he is pressured. I like him but having a QB like that limits an offense. Ryan Mallet for all his skills as a QB has the same limitation. When he is pressured consistently in games he often loses. The guy is not a running threat and cannot create when pass plays break down.

The biggest factor that separates Cam from the other 1000 dual threat QB's is the fact he runs people over. On the scrambles he will get 3-5 yards more per run by not going out of bounds and running you over.

Its not like he is the greatest dual threat QB to ever play the game. Get off his nuts man

I never said he was but having a guy who can create his own offense is a very nice advantage to have for a team.

hey homeboy.. remember this post of your's?

quote:

I think it will be easy for the players to quit on him once the fanbase pressure comes with that first loss on Saturday. Players tend to give up once they know their coach is done for. I think once LSU loses to UF the season goes in the tank from there. UF is coming off a completely humiliating loss to Alabama and beating LSU will send the delusional LSU fanbase into a tirade toward Les Miles. Even though Florida should beat them at home.

yeah.. fail.

Lord, I hope not.. He's an amazing talent, but I sure as hell don't want Alabama to ever run that offense.

He's just the best this season

No but seriously with the defenses in today's SEC I think it is becoming more and more important to have a good bit of mobility in the pocket. It is a huge advantage to have a Tim Tebow or Cameron Newton that can extend plays or even make their own plays out of nothing.

If you have a statue in the pocket it really limits what you can do. That's not to say you can't have success because if you are a great passer it's quite easy to confuse defenses and have great success.

or throw the ball away.

Which he never does. Whenever, McElroy faces the slighest bit of pressure, he takes off like he is Cam Newton. And Alabama doesn't need a Newton type QB. The offensive line usually gives McElroy plenty of time to at least throw the ball away. Alabama need a Ryan Mallett type QB or heck even a Matt Flynn would be a huge upgrade over what we have now.

He is 2 300lb defensive lineman from being out for the season. Or a 250lb MLB. Or a CB shooting his knees out. That is the problem with the mobile QB, they open themselves up to injury.

FWIW, we still run smashmouth football it's just at high speed and a good bit of presnap motion.

That's one common misconception about what we do.

His build will save him from injury. He's huge in stature and can run better than a lot of RBs.
