Cal brings in talent every year, why will the results be any different at Arkansas?

Seeing this question asked a lot. Every time Arkansas adds a new player this seems to be the go-to by certain fanbases.

It's true Cal is bringing a top 5 freshman class to Arkansas, which he did year in and year out at Kentucky.

The difference is the amount of experience he's bringing to Arkansas through the portal.

Here's what he had done at Kentucky through the transfer portal, since transfer rankings were established:

2022: 1 commit, #71 transfer class
2023: 1 commit, #88 transfer class

Now at Arkansas

2024: 4 commits, #1 transfer class (likely adding another 4* over the weekend, possibly a couple of 3*s)

Cal's 3 incoming freshman on the roster this coming season, will be fewer than he ever had during his tenure at Kentucky.

Kentucky used the portal. You can ague their "rank" or whatever, but they used it extensively the last 3-4 years (and got good players out of it).

2024 team - transfers
- Tre Mitchell (Sr) (West Virginia)
- Antonio Reeves (Sr) (Illinois State)

2023 team - transfers
- CJ Fredrick (Senior) (Iowa)
- Sahvir Wheeler (Senior) (Georgia)
- Antonio Reeves (Senior) (Illinois State)
- Jacob Toppin (Senior) (Rhode Island)
- Oscar Tshiebwe (Senior) (West Virginia)

2022 team - transfers
- Davion Mintz (Sr) (Creighton)
- Kellan Grady (Sr) (Davidson)
- CJ Fredrick (Sr) (Iowa)
- Sahvir Wheeler (Jr) (Georgia)
- Jacob Toppin (Jr) (Rhode Island)
- Oscar Tshiebwe (Jr) (West Virginia)

That's combining guys over multiple years.

I never said he didn't use the portal at UK.

As I said, this will be a less freshman-heavy class than Cal ever had at Kentucky.

4 of the top 5 scorers on his 2023 team were upperclassmen transfers (Oscar, Reeves, Toppin, Wheeler).

5 of the top 7 scorers on his 2022 teams were upperclassmen transfers (Oscar, Grady, Wheeler, Mintz, Toppin).

The 2024 team was his first real return to the old Cal model youth movement that Kentucky has had since COVID.

Ask yourself these simple questions

#1 Will he care more about the NBA than Arkansas
#2 Will he keep his large ego in check
#3 Will he hire a assistant who can take over during a game

If none of these things happen at his stay in Fayetteville, use Jimbo at TAMU on the future of the Hogs.

and 4 freshmen

One of his more experienced squads, granted. Only 2 of those you mentioned had been under Cal before that season.

We're likely to have 3-4 with their 2nd year in the system.

Pittman cares a lot about Arkansas, means little at the end of the day

We are downgrading in terms of HC ego size

He hired Kenny Payne who got a W in BWA when Cal got ejected

You are probably surprised to hear this, but outside my BAMA sports sites and podcasts, which are numerous, it really doesn't come up as often as you think.

You're implying that it's being discussed in Bama media way more than I would've expected.

I actually like this roster Cal has put together at Arkansas so far. Getting Davis was huge. Really curious to see how he fills out the last 4-5 spots.

We need a stretch 4 type (a lot of smoke around Kasean Pryor)

And a more experienced PG (DJ Wagner likely committing soon)

Wooga Poplar has been talked about but not much info there

If we miss on Pryor I imagine we'll look for another 4, not sure who

You are welcome to list the teams that have won a NC by relying heavily on the portal since I am assuming that is the ultimate goal of hiring Calipari

There are still quite a few experienced mid-major and starters from bad major PGs available. Finding 2-3 guys who are experienced, ok with limited minutes on a good team and happy with a nice little NIL deal probably shouldn't be too difficult.

If your thread comforts you, then good. I said this in one of the first threads after he left UK.

He won't say it, but he will do things differently because he know what he was doing doesn't work anymore. His reputation is in shambles and his ego can't take that. He will do things a bit different to try to make a run or two. Will it work? Time will tell.

His stubbornness at UK should give way to doing what UK fans wanted him to do for years. Will it and will he change for his own good? Time will tell.

I will say this, the knock on his has been coaching, and he didn't bring his best 2 assistants with him. Buyer beware.

I see reason for Arky to hope he can raise you from the ashes, but I would be at best cautiously optimistic. No one wastes more talent than Cal.

This

To be fair, it was a single throwback that secured Cal at UK for so long. My question is if Arkansas has another Anthony Davis in the pipeline in the very near future. Without "The Brow" my guess is Cal would have been exposed earlier and been gone much sooner.

we had two elite 8 with lesser talent and muss acting a fool. We will be ranked, make the dance, and Im okay with that. Missing it this year ranked preseason, beating purdue, then flopping in a gay fashion was embarrassing.

You’re honestly an idiot if you think Arkansas won’t be a force under Cal.

Even these last few years where Kentucky has had early NCAA Tournament exits, Kentucky was still a major player in the SEC and nationally.

You’re saying a basketball coach wouldn’t have won a title without a very dominant player? Wow, say it ain’t so! Welcome to how sports work.
