Bama has dirt on him.

I am pretty sure he was implicated in that FBI investigation for possible violations. He probably wasn't stupid enough to get caught with recorded phone conversations about buying players, but still maybe lucky to get any buy out.

This is the same situation as texas was in. People called us racists for firing a black coach for gross underperformance.

The problem with that stupid opinion is that we FIRED a black coach, then hired him.

If there is grounds to fire for cause, why pay him anything and use it to hire the next coach which I'm hearing several bama fans thinking will be Petino (which I think is in the Gruden to TN category)

perhaps because he was only one of many, including Auburn I would add, that has been implicated as possibly violating rules, but his transgression compared to most may have been minor. Any such violation, though, could be cause to fire him. Finally, though, he seems like a sincerely nice guy. He aggressively promoted The University of Alabama. Sometimes it just doesn't work out, and maybe administration feels the right thing to do, in spite of the fact they may could use the possible violations not to pay him, maybe they feel the right thing to do is work out a reasonable deal with him.

Crazy concept, I know, to try to be fair and reasonable.

Because the legal definition of ‘for cause’ is not always a cut and dry issue. And with that kind of money, litigation over ‘for cause’ is a real possibility. Also, Bamd could perhaps win the AJ battle by proving cause but that could potentiallly open the door for the ncaa to poke around.

Why would he agree to anything less then what he is owed per his contract? If he accepts less he's an idiot unless he already has another job lined up.

Agree. I said the exact thing when Gus agreed to lower buyout last year. The signed contract gives the coaches all the leverage.

His buyout is $8 million right now but it drops to $6 million on 4/15. Most likely the discussion has been what number between those two will get him gone now. It's one of those few times where each side has legitimate motivation to negotiate. Bama wants to move on today and Avery knows he has a very narrow window to get more than $6 mil.

Could also be timing of payments. The buyout is to be paid over 4 years. Alabama could wait until 4/16 and buyout drops to $6M paid at $1.5 per year. But they don’t want to have a lame duck coach for another month when the search could already be started. Avery could say I’ll take the $6M today but I want lump sum.

Well, if there were any doubt that the right decision was made (there isn't), this should seal it. When the rival fans think you "made a huge mistake", you definitely made the right call.

Now that makes sense. Take less to go on and get it now.

Reminds me of that stupid commercial "it's my money and I want it NOW!"

Sickening the way Avery was treated by this fanbase. Absolutely sickening.

I’ve lost a ton of respect for that group of fans. I know it’s not all, but a majority have made me absolutely sick to my stomach. Avery earned another season at MINIMUM.

I agree; he earned another year due to his skin color. His skin color earned it because the color of his skin is darker than the people who paid him.

The only drawback to Avery, and probably the reason he is getting fired, is that he grew up privileged and rich.

Being privileged just about entirely canceled out the color of his skin in regards to whether or not he should have been fired so soon.

I'm sure the people who fired him weighed the positive of the color of his skin against the negative of his privilege and it came out an overall negative so they let him go.

It is impossible for black people to have privilege. It's like you live in the 60's, man!
