Pitino, Wright, Izzo, K, Self would probably be my top 5.

I don’t think Pearl has an argument to be above any of them or Few, Drew or Sampson. Huggins has a damn strong resume too. Boeheim has the skins on the wall but is past his prime.

Cal is probably up there as well now that he has Antigua back.

Pearl is in the next tier after that imo.

Pitino and Calipari have both taken multiple programs to Final Fours (Pitino: Providence, Kentucky, Louisville and Calipari: UMass, Memphis, and Kentucky). Bob Huggins has had two Final Fours at different school (Cinci and West Virginia) and I'd argue he was a broken leg away from an NC at Cinci.

I'd argue Coach K could do similar if he had been at more than a couple of seasons at Army and an assistant at Indiana before going to Duke.

Mark Few is another considering what he's done at Gonzaga. Again, he's a great coach that has just been content staying at one job. The man would've been scary at UCLA.

I'm not saying Pearl isn't Top 10. But he's certainly not the only out there that's made some stops and done well at smaller basketball programs in his career.

Funny you left off his first 3 years at Auburn..

Auburn Tigers (Southeastern Conference) (2014–present)

2014–15 Auburn 15–20 4–14 13th
2015–16 Auburn 11–20 5–13 13th
2016–17 Auburn 18–14 7–11 11th

In basketball you can have success immediately, so don't give me no rebuilding bullshite.

The better question is, are there 5 coaches that would even want to coach at that cow pasture?

And Pearl is a double dribble call away from winning one at AU.

Of course not. In fact Cal and Pitino are two that might be able to replicate what Pearl has done at AU.

IMO the list is greater than two though. That's really the argument here.

No.

And let’s not pretend Pearl has only been a coach for 5-6 years. He’s had a lengthy career at this point.

Pearl is able to build up bad programs due to his style of play and his personality. I don’t think he has any more success at a blue blood than he would at AU/TN.

No problem with that list. Put Pearl in izzo, k, and self’s situations and he’s likely just as successful.

All fine with me. Pearl is vastly underrated for winning wherever he goes when those places are difficult basketball jobs.

Winning a NC at Southern Indiana. Taking Milwaukee to the tournament multiple times and getting a few upset as a low seed, taking UT to the sweet 16 3 times in a 4 year span, and then taking AU to a final 4.

Winning consistently at multiple places where winning isn’t easy shows that he’s one of the top coaches in the country. I’m not sure Izzo, Self, and K could do that.

I don’t need to. It was a semi final game:

I'm not saying he's definitely top ten, but I think he's in the conversation. Auburn was arguably the worst P5 job in the country, and he's taken us to a Final Four (Chuma injury and double dribble from potential NC) and perennial conference success.

We were looking really good going into that 2020 NCAA tournament before it got cancelled too.

We have guys playing in the NBA for the first time in a long time. It was cool to see Harper play some minutes for the Pelicans the other night.

You forgot Pearl's most telling stat: Most teams placed on probation, 3 and counting.

The biggest knock on Pearl is he actually wastes an assistant coaching position spot on Steven. Think of what he could do if he actually hired someone with a brain.

Its true. His legacy will always be how many times he was caught cheating. Coach show cause.

Which team, besides UT, did he get put on probation?

Chuck Person got AU put on probation.

There is much more dirt on Pitino, K, and Self if we are going to try to list the top 5 coaches with no bending the rules in recruiting.

Yes, he’s no doubt the best at getting placed on probation. A habitual cheater.
