Whenever I get asked what the loudest stadium is, I have to couch it by saying that I haven't been to Texas A&M, Clemson, South Carolina or Auburn for a game and I've heard those places would be in the running if I had witnessed it.

quote:

1. Tiger Stadium, LSU:
2. Orange Bowl, Miami
3. Lane Stadium, Virginia Tech
4. Bryant-Denny, Alabama
5. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida
6. Neyland Stadium, Tennessee
7. Ohio Stadium, Ohio State
8. Sanford Stadium, Georgia
9. Autzen Stadium, Oregon
10. (tie) Camp Randall, Wisconsin
10. (tie) Beaver Stadium, Penn State

Just missed the cut: Nebraska , Oklahoma , FSU and West Virginia

Adding the specific notes on the SEC teams he included:

quote:

1. Tiger Stadium, LSU: It's only the country's eighth-biggest stadium, with a capacity more than 17,000 less than Michigan Stadium, but “Death Valley” is the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football. The place is just mind-numbingly loud for a ridiculous amount of time, as if the visiting team is backed up against its own goal line facing third and long for four straight hours. No surprise the Tigers have a nation's longest 18-game home winning streak going. Good luck to Washington, South Carolina and 'Bama this fall in trying to get out of this place with a W.

quote:

4. Bryant-Denny, Alabama: I've seen some lists which had a few other SEC and Big Ten schools above the Tide's home site. I've been to Bryant-Denny a few times in the past two years. I don't think I've been anywhere louder during a day game than this place was the day undefeated Cam Newton and arch-rival Auburn came to town. Last year's visit from LSU also was pretty hard to top.

quote:

5. Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Florida: The Swamp, which surprisingly “only” holds about 89,000, ranks up there with Death Valley in terms of that per capita noise factor.

quote:

6. Neyland Stadium, Tennessee: Michigan and Penn State may have even bigger capacity than the Vols home (capacity: 102,455), but UT's place is louder and, in fact, much louder than Michigan's Big House.

quote:

8. Sanford Stadium, Georgia: At almost 93,000, the Dawgs have the country's fifth-largest on-campus stadium. Mark Richt is 56-13 in home games.

5 of the top 8 are SEC teams. Sounds about right.

And you could say the Orange Bowl rating was a historical footnote and not really anything relevant in 2012 going forward.

I've been to Blacksburg and I would say they have a pretty rocking atmosphere for only 66k. And Autzen and Husky Stadium (which he mentions but doesn't rate) are also worthy of noting.

Nice corrolary to the discussion TTsTowel started about places he'd want to visit if he were a top recruit.

Tiger Stadium, LSU:

Only for the first half. They all leave about midway though the 3rd quarter, especially if they're getting waxed by Troy.

Auburn ranks in the top three in the SEC with LSU and UF in my book.

Rankings like this are so flawed. I didn't read the link, but going to a game against a mid-tier or even semi-rival won't compare to the noise in a big time, biggest rival, season on the line night game. I've heard Georgia get just as loud if not louder than any stadium I've ever been to with the exception of LSU, and I've been to probably 25+ stadiums.

Dude, he listed 5 SEC teams in his top 8.

And he couched it by saying of the stadiums he's actually been to.

I bet the OB was rocking in the late 90s early 00s.

Obviously it's garbage today, People from Florida are the biggest bandwagoners on the planet.

If you read the article, he heavily qualifies that. It's more of a historical footnote and giving them credit for getting really loud for a few big time games. Sounds about right. Miami is a very fair weather fanbase.
