Linky

This is a disturbing and growing trend. Soon the scrubs will be the only ones playing in the bowls. Not good for college football. To me, you have an obligation to finish your college career for your team in exchange for a free ride. They already get to leave after their junior year. Man up and play the damn bowl game. And before some of you start saying they are protecting their future, etc, etc. I know what their aim is and what the risks are. But they could just as easily trip on the stairs and tear up a knee. Play the damn game. It’s the least they can do.

While I understand why they wouldnt want to get injured..

God forbid they go out and get real jobs.

On a serious note, bowls are fun and used mainly for recruiting. Let them sit. They are fun.

Eh. Bowl games are for next year's team unless you are in the playoff. Texas might as well let a guy play that will be there next season

Of all the things I would get riled about in college sports, this ranks just above, well, nothing.

Of course bowls are in trouble... They have been in trouble since they have created so many that 6-7 teams get an invite...

I feel like this wouldn’t happen as much if some bowls weren’t a frickin month after the last game.

I think the rate of football players suffering career ending injuries are slightly higher when playing a football game vs mundane activities.

The least they can do is risk their future earnings so their school can maximize profit in a meaningless bowl game? If schools are required to carry insurance on every player to ensure they get paid either way, then yeah I agree with you.

Much more likely to get hurt during a game. That's such a terrible argument.

Doubt it. Kids get a vacation and free stuff to play a fun game. I can get guys getting drafted not doing it but hey there's 70+ others on the the team to take your place

It's a meaningless game for all but 4 teams.

This is an example of what's wrong with how we perceive college athletes.

These guys get to do what most of us only dreamt of doing. And in doing so, they get a free education and a chance to make millions. Im supposed to feel sorry for them? Think again. I know they bust their arse, but they are still pampered and coddled too. It’s not a bad gig compared to the real world. Gimme a break!!

This.

Edited to add, if they guy basically quits the team before the semester ends they should make him pay back some sort of prorated amount based on the value of the scholarship.

That's a stretch. Many of these guys are funneled through the easiest classes on campus just to stay eligible.

So their concerns and troubles don't mean anything? Because they play a sport you like?

Do they belong to you?

It was meaningless for 80% of the teams in late October
