Alabama DC Kane Wommack: "Mike Bobo is one of the best play callers I've ever gone against."

The game proved what other DCs admit. Gunner was 18/22 with 1 TD. 9 0f 10 on 3rd downs.
Bu Bu But all those tunnel screens!!!
206 rushing yards by RBs. Phillips 7.1 ypc. Walker (Bo, not Herschel) 6.9 ypc.
But all those runs up the middle!!!

I am a Bobo hater turned homer.
He converted me in 1996, though.

No offense. I dont put much stock in public comments. No coach says anything negative before or after a game about another coach. Ever.

I have heard anonymous compliments for Bobo through Mike Griffith, Aaron Murray, and Brooks Austin.

The opposing coaches respect the hell out of Bobo.

It's really players making plays, that is why the next great coordinator quickly ends up on the ash heap of history.

Whoever followed Monken as the offensive coordinator was going to catch a lot of shite. Monken might've been the best OC in the country. He made Stetson Bennett into a Heisman Trophy finalist and then Lamar Jackson was almost the unanimous MVP in Monken's first year with the Ravens.

And then when Kirby hired Bobo, it set up two layers of hate. One was that Kirby was just hiring one of his buddies. And the other was that a lot of Georgia fans already had decided that Bobo wasn't a good OC from the first time because he called too many draw plays on 3rd and 28 and ran the ball up the middle too much.

So instead of having maybe the best offensive coordinator in the country, we have a top 10-15 offensive coordinator who's really aligned with how Kirby wants to play and what Kirby wants to do.

The Georgia fans hating on Bobo are the ones who are chasing football perfection and think that it's possible to go 16-0 every season and break every team we play every week.

These are the fans who are chasing football perfection and will never find any real contentment as a Georgia football fan, because they're always wanting more and think that there's some "standard" out there that was never achievable.

These Georgia fans are the seriously aggravating sonsofbitches.

Bobo is a really good OC but like you said top 15. I don't know about top 10. He does well with all the talent we get at UGA. He runs a solid hybrid, pro-style offense that distributes the ball to a lot of players, but it's nothing innovative. I think compared to Chaney he's really good but he's compared to Monken who was the best OC we've ever had.

Easily top 10.

Do you want to name the 10 who are better?

What's "innovative" in the NFL right now is 2 and 3 tight end sets. Georgia has been doing that. Last Saturday we basically ran an endaround where the quarterback is both the quarterback and the wide receiver. It was pretty innovative. If Gunner doesn't trip, it might be a long touchdown.

this is perfectly said and exactly correct.

But what REALLY gets me about the whole thing is that Bobo had some of the bigger plays/wins at UGA in the last 40 years. The bomb to Corey Allen to send it to OT against AU in 96, beating UF in 97 (his numbers were kinda meh but he did throw for almost 300 yards and he was the QB afterall, and they get the blame/credit regardless), the throw int he corner to corey allen to beat tech in 97. Then of course he complete NINETEEN passes in a row (ended up 26 for 28) against wisconsin and the heisman winner, en route to a bowl game beatdown. The copmlettion percentage is still a UGA bowl record to this day and also stands as the highest percentage given up by a wisconsin defense....ever. And on top of aaaaaaallll that, he's just a good ol' southern georgia boy. Dude would probably rather be inhaling cold beer and fishing with a fat dip in instaed of working but he does it anyway.

This is a guy that our fanbase should be celebrating and some people jsut go out of their way to shite on him the first time we don't convert a 3rd down. It really is perplexing beyond words.

I think most of the current Bobo haters hate Bobo because someone told them that the OC is the root of Georgia's problems.

They can't identify the cause of problems themselves.

And because of that, they can't move off their publicly stated stance.

If you can't say why, then there is nothing that can move you to the other side.

how many schools can you name that utterly hate the 2nd best OC they've ever had?

What I don't get is that we don't do this for ANY other coach or position player in school history, other than OC for some reason. LIke imagine saying Todd Gurley is gutter trash simply because he isn't Herschel. Or Lawson Luckie being despicable because he isn't brock. Why is Bobo held to some imaginary mythical standard that nobody else in school history is?

Bobo's a good one, but I think Wayne McDuffie would have to be in the conversation too. Hines Ward still might have the school record for most passing yards in a game against Florida, which is pretty crazy to think about.

Bobo’s first run was hampered by Mark Richt’s lack of emphasis on recruit OL.

I've read this a lot.

What specifically does it mean?
Richt did not want to recruit the best offensive linemen to Georgia possible?
He intentionally would not speak to offensive line recruits because he didn't respect the position for an offense?

Lack of emphasis and lack of success are not the same thing.
But I have literally seen people say that Richt "did not care" about offensive line recruiting.

Bobo's first run was more often hampered by the defense.
Bobo is OC for the #1 scoring offense in the country today.
What is Willie Martinez, Todd Grantham, and Jeremy Pruitt doing right now?

It got pretty bad, man. Neil Callaway was the one who got made fun of for recruiting "260 pound linemen with bad shoulders," but it didn't get much better after that. The offensive lineman that Richt signed from Valwood there towards the end was the one that really made some fans throw their hands up.

I just went back and looked and this is the list of offensive linemen drafted

2007 – tackle drafted in seventh round

2008 – guard drated in seventh round

2011 - guard drafted in 4th round

2012 - tackle drafted in second round // center drafted in 4th round, tackle drafted in seventh round

(Bobo leaves in 2014)

2016 – tackle drafted in seventh round

...We had 4 offensive lineman drafted in the first 4 rounds of the 2025 draft. We had 3 offensive lineman drafted in the first four rounds during Bobo's first time, total.

the proof is in the pudding. We didn't get a lot of higher ranked guys at the position. Richt definitely did put an emphasis on the skill positions and that was evident in recruting rankings. But for pretty much the entirety of hsi tenure we recruited meh level recruits, maybe a 4* here and there, with the ever ever so rare 5* thrown in occasionally.

I agree with this in theory, but then you have examples like the 2004 signing class in which we signed a grant total of 2 OL in the entire class. One ended up being a decnet tackelt for us, the other did nothing. The very next year in the 2005 class we signed ONE ol who didn't do anything for us. 3 OL across two classes. That is simply inexcusable and speaks to effort. In 2003 we started 5 the season with 5 brand new starters across the OL, 3 SO and 2 FR. That also speaks to a lack of recruiting emphasis.

Eveyr coach is going to have some area that they prefer jsut based on who they are. Kirby is a defensive guy so more often than not we recruit the hell out of LBs and seconary players. Richt was a QB and offensive guy so we always recruited QB and RB well. It's just a fact that his OL recruiting was pretty pedestrian.

MOstly agree. Bobo's first run encompassed 8 years so that's a lot of data to go on. Many of those years we did have less than preferable defenses. Some years we simply weren't a talented team in general (like 2010) so there's only so much you can do.

Identifying the symptoms is not the same thing as identifying the problem.

We lacked success on the OL in terms of NFL drafts and UDFA.

But the issue was not about "caring about the offensive line".

The issue was roster management.
The evidence is that we had the same problems at defensive back.

How many offensive linemen do you need in a game? 5-6.
How many defensive backs do you need in a game? 6-7.

It was pointed out the low numbers for linemen. It was the same issue for DBs.

What was the root cause of the problem?
We were recruiting to an 85 man roster size. We would not extend more offers than we had spots on the scholarship limit.
To do that, we limited the number of OL and DBs each class.

When you have academic inelligibles, players kicked off the team, and players taking medical scholarships, our low numbers became even worse by Fall camp.
A "big year" for numbers was often a reaction to an entire football season where we had attrition before Fall Camp because of the 3 issues stated above.

I dont follow recruiting any more.
But when Kirby came in, we started taking 4 and 5 DBs/OL every class. If offers were not honored on signing day, it happened. If players were asked to call another program so they could get more playing time, it happened and we had room for new recruits.
When life happened and players were no longer on the roster after February, we had contingencies for roster spots.

I am arguing a point about semantics.
Saying that Richt didn't care or prioritize OL recruiting is disingenuous in my opinion.
We prioritized kids each class.
Richt's entire recruiting pitch was, "you are the only commitable offer at this position. That is how much we prioritize you. Look at all of the other offers to other players by Bama and Florida". We won some. We lost some. But the end of the day was that we were signing the same amount of linemen as we were wide receivers when our offense was heavy 11 personnel. The strategy was poor.

this part isn't even debatable though. It's an objective fact that all anyone would have to do is just look. As mentioned above we went a two year stretch with only signing three total OL (only 1 of which was passable). That isn't a discussion or a conversation, it is black and white proof that OL was not a priority.

I will say we also had some plain ol' rotten luck in the form of an inordinate amount of season ending shoulder injuries to OL, plus some of our 4* guys completely sucking arse. But all of that is especially magnified if you only have a razor thin amount of dudes at the position to start with.

Case in point: In 2008 our megastud LT Trinton Sturdivant went down in August and it basically derailed the OL the whole year. Guys like tate ratledge or amarius mims missed half (or all) of a season with injury but we barely skipped a beat. That's depth.

We basically dominated from start to finish did we have some lucky breaks? Yes through 6 games Mike bobo and this offense has not been a problem

You are wrong.

The entire sales pitch to the best OL recruits with interest was "you are our #1 priority. We are not offering anyone else".

When they sign with someone else, we don't have a plan B.

You are confusing priority with results (or my preference would be failed strategy. We would sign a John Theus. But we would miss on that target the next 2 years).

Do you hear yourself? Look at what you've said that's quoted above. How can you type that out, then in the next breath say taht we prioritized OL recruiting? I'm telling you Richt did NOT make OL recruiting a prioerity and what you yourself jsut said completely and totally reinforces that.

Telling the best recruit at their position "hey your'e our guy and we aren't even looking at anyone else" adn then literally having no backup once that guy goes elsewhere isn't prioritizing anything.
