Any thoughts on what this could be?

At one time I would have said realignment, but now that seems unlikely. There is always a threat from the USCs (west) and Ohio States of the world, but that cannot tip the whole apple cart. I literally see no real threat for the time being that can change the trajectory we are on now except maybe mass sanctions to multiple teams in a short period of time.

That wouldn't be a shocker, for sure.

the ACC... one day they'll figure it out in football, win in Omaha, and then what will the difference really be?

The ACC has the same recruiting area...not sure what the deal is.

With what teams other than FSU? They obviously have some good things going in basketball, but that will never usurp the SEC on its own.

Excluding Texas and Louisiana are important IMO.

The biggest threat to the SEC is the SEC itself.

one day they'll figure it out... you have Florida State, Louisville now, and then a host of sleeping giants like Clemson, Miami, Virginia Tech, etc.

not to mention they'll probably count everything Notre Dame does too

the 4 Tobacco Road schools cannibalize each other in football where numbers are important... NC doesn't produce enough talent to go around. kind of like MS

The other conferences uniting as one against us, for example with the CFB selection committee, your conferences rep is not allowed to be in the room when they are talking about teams from your conference, so in theory (and with a little help from ESPN if they have a monied interest in it, i.e. ratings falling due to everyone knowing the SEC team will blow out any other team) they could exclude the SEC from the playoffs even if we fielded a team that could easily win the MNC, and there's nothing we could do about it.

The SEC's overconfidence will one day be its weakness.

Plus North Carolina is the 10th most populous state with no true football power...ever. If a coach like Saban/Spurrier/Petey/Meyer etc gets that UNC job they could be something. I thought Butch Davis might of been the guy but that ending was a little inglorious.

Judging by the draft this year, SEC looks pretty far out in front.

it is funny that wake forest is the only NC team to ever play in the BCS...

OK so realistically, the only potential threat I see to the SEC dominance is tougher academic standards.

Prolly won't happen.

This is true. But success can change that. There's OP on TR about LSU baseball 'back-in-the-day' (60's, 70's). It was an afterthought manned by part-timers and walk-ons. Now it's the Cathedral of college ball. I bet success would change a lot of tunes up there. The one impediment I see is that they have zero tolerance for shenanigans. UNC is like a public Vandy. This, rightly or wrongly, will hamper recruiting.

No doubt. Where else would they go? Clemson? Virginia? That's a gold mine I'd imagine, like East Texas for LSU.
