man, you should be listening to us old farts. we have lots of experience (or some of us do). but for you to come out and agree with an LSU fan and openly admit it takes real courage.

Gainesville still has a pretty strong music scene, although not as great as it once was, but still probably much better than most here are giving it credit for.

Is Nashville #1 for making mass-produced pop country with very basic lyrics?

yes. that's what the mass market is right now and that's what they deliver. but you are referring to the radio scene and the recording scene. nashville is much, much, much more than that and not just pop country. sounds like we are alike in our disdain for that segment of the industry. i simply don't listen to it anymore but when i return to nashville (lived there for a long time) i get back in touch with the scene. right now i'm really into bluegrass and believe me it's huge in nashville right now. you don't hear that on the radio (unless it's on WSM during the Grand Ole Opry). and, by the way, the GOO is a damn good place to hear some fine music these days; so is Vanderbuilts Blair school of music. most young people eschew these venues but would probably be blown away if they went.

College Station should be higher on the list as it is less than 2 hours away from Austin, which IS the Live Music Capitol of the World.

there ya go. sure, you texans rate the down home the highest, especially those that have never been to the others. ever been to nashville? more live music than austin; how about new york city? ditto; how about LA? ditto. austin is the capital of texas, not live music. granted, i know of no other place in texas that has much live music so i would definately say austin is the live music capitol of texas, but not the country, much less the world.

Your memory is selective and shitty. I can name off of the top of my hand plenty of bands bigger and better than Modest Mouse that have played in Oxford recently.

I'm just saying you're overrating it.

The broader point is that Oxford doesn't get any more shows of that type than any of the rest of the SEC towns, except maybe Starkville. If that's your basis for comparison, I'd see why you'd rank it so highly.

Its a small town, with 17k college students. Hell, there are 7,000 more college students in Fayetteville than there are in Oxford.

Bands play where they can draw crowds.

And having a "good music scene" is about more than having a few big shows in town every year. Its about having a critical mass of young people smoking weed and making music, too.

College towns with good music scenes are generally towns where people graduate (or drop out) and then find reasons and means to stick around for a few years afterwards.

Considering BR is 1 hr from Nola...it's #1.

If we include music within one hour of the college town, you're still probably ranked the same.

I guess we'll just go ahead and claim the invention of the Blues, Elvis, Johnny Cash, and all Memphis rap.

Nobody does this in Oxford

Groundbreaking stuff here

With a very good music scene, pound for pound. Haven't seen any evidence that Fayetteville has a better music scene than similarly sized towns.

The fact that they can draw crowds in Oxford is noteworthy. And the fact that they want to come to Oxford to record their albums is noteworthy as well.

The whole "Oxford is small" argument actually helps my case. A town its size shouldn't have the music venues and record labels it does.

This. Can an Ole Miss person post about Ole Miss or Oxford without making huge exaggerations? Is it possible? And stop with the comparisons to Athens. Oxford is not even in the same ballpark as Athens. In anything.

Very good question. The answer is that Oxford is the epicenter or revisionist history. It's all htey have. Hell, Starkville pulled Jason Mraz for Bulldog Bash in 2010 and just about all of Oxford was in StarkVegas that night

Same goes for when Oxford had the Avett Brothers for Double Decker. That's how these things go.

When was in school at lsu the varsity did a great job of booking good shows ie Dave , Rob Thomas , Sheryl crow , Incubus , but went to shite in 2000. There was a lull for about 5 years in Br from 2000-2005. Post Katrina it got much better IMO and deserves a top 4 ranking

Know how I know you've never been to Columbia, MO? Columbia has several great live music venues, and gets lots of great bands. I've seen a wide variety of shows here, from Willie Nelson to Snoop Dogg to Yonder Mountain to the Black Keyes. There is a great club called The Blue Note, and they do a Summerfest series with outdoor live music every fe weeks, often for free. George Thoroughgood, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Luke Bryan, etc. Plus, there is the Roots 'N Blues festival every fall that has a phenomenal lineup every year.

The only place they may lack a little is in the home-grown bands. There are great local bands, but not necessarily any who have made it big. Yet.
