I still think Freeze is the best on field coach in the SEC. Too bad he took shortcuts to try to get Ole Miss in the upper half of the league.

So you don't have he's the best on the field coach when back in '14 he had a solid season going and lost a couple of really close games to LSU & AU then got his arse handed to him by a 6-6 Arky team and then got totally embarrassed by TCU in the bowl game? Or in '15 he starts off solid and then screws around and loses to a Memphis team that landed in the Birmingham Bowl? Then last year his teams crumbled in the second half of games resulting in a 5 win season. The best on-the-field coach?

Look at the injuries he suffered at the end of the year. He had some talent, but he did a lot with smoke and mirrors.

Very questionable 4th down calls in that game and the Arkansas game that had a major impact.

Two Eastern Division titles trumps an SEC Title and a NC Appearance ?
There's something about chalking up your only bowl win as the AU coach in a Legion Field bowl game vs Memphis that tarnishes that SEC title & NC appearance.

He's getting credit for appearances/titles as an assistant too?

You do recognize who the HC was that year... right?

Saban is light years ahead of the rest of the pack. After him, I guess I'd say Mahlzan followed by Mullin followed by ... hell, I don't know who else.

Gus is probably the second best football mind but he is not the second best CEO (looks the other way on character issues in the name of winning which can lead to problems). Mullen is the 2nd best CEO but is a subpar recruiter.

2010 was Gene Chizik.... Not Gus.

The other poster said gus had 2 sec titles, but he only has 1.

In 2010. Because the poster said Gus has "two championships".

Mullen is solid. Recruiting is tough at State but he gets about a 5 star a year and a few 4 stars a year. I think he calls the game fairly well. If I had to name one thing he fails at, it would be his game preparation and getting his players to start out hot. State has fell behind early and couldn't come back to win. He made a few close but couldn't pull it off.

What I find interesting about this thread is that there is no clear cut #2.....

Exactly.

In 2010.

With Gene Chizik as the head coach.

Who had nothing to do with the offensive success of that 2010 team, of which offensive success was 99% responsible for winning those games that season.

(P.S. The *one* huge thing Chizik gets credit for that year is managing the team at the end of the season that year through the national and local medias attempt to tar-and-feather Cam Newton and the 2010 team.)
