He was a class act and a great man. He reminds me of when America was great. He couldn't survive in this snowflake lib society.

It was ok for Texas to buy players and not anyone else. Look at what happened when SMU started beating Texas.

You don't know what you are talking about. The Longhorns were 4-3 against those bought-and-paid-for SMU teams leading up to their death penalty.

A Nebraska fan who hated Texas and got fired from his previous Dallas TV job because he wore a plastic Razorback on his head during a sportscast the week of the Texas-Arkansas game, was the one who exposed SMU (Google Dale Hansen and David Stanley).

SMU had already been busted but doubled down with a slush fund administered by Texas Gov. Bill Clements.

"This must be what God looks like," said George Blanda describing the towering six-foot-three-inch Bear Bryant, his coach at Kentucky.

I’ve read it. Pretty sure that is how things were in the SWC. In fact it never stopped until the conference was disbanded. It was ok for Texas to buy players and not anyone else. Look at what happened when SMU started beating Texas.

You must be trolling.
SMU's excuse was never "But Texas does it"

SMU was a small private school that looked to buy players because people even in Dallas did not grow up SMU fans.

While other SWC coaches would pin their business card to the corkboard in the HS coach's office, SMU's Ron Meyer would tack up hundred dollar bills.

The entire SWC was doing the same as SMU, SMU just had to keep up it's payroll a little longer.

Love the Trans A and M.

True, he used to kick LSU's butt every year. Got so tired of losing to him. Now we have Lord Saben. Sigh

Yes, the Longhorns giving Marcus Dupree a pair of Lucchese cowboy boots or an assistant giving a player money to go home for a funeral, is equal to a huge slush fund run by the Texas governor, an SMU grad.

Much respect to the General. That's really bad-arse.

The Mount Rushmore of SEC coaches includes the Bear, the General, and Saban. The 4th coach is debatable, but those 3 are permanent and not up for discussion.

I would probably put Spurrier with them. Changed the way football was played in the south.

He's certainly in consideration for sure. Vaught also has an argument.

We went from 25 years of dominance to sub par teams overnight, with the second tier recruits that were slow suburban kids.

yeah, we were cheating.

Long Story.

The Bear lived on Tuscaloosa Country Club - down the first fairway. He would walk up to the bar in the clubhouse every night and get smashed. At closing time, he would stagger back down the fairway to home and bed.

One night he was so drunk he fell on the fairway and couldn't get up. Eventually his wife (Miz. Bear) got so worried she called Tuscaloosa PD and asked for help. A couple of hours later, they found him, Passed out on the fairway.

From that night on, when he got ready to leave for home, a waiter was summoned to walk with him as he staggered home.

"Back door Bear delivery Maam. Good night Boss Bryant."

I guess everyone knew he could be (was) a sot drunk.

knew the guy that scheduled Bryant's alumni speaking engagements across the country... never failed year after year, when discussing iteneraries the only response was "Open bar right?".

My second favorite coach all time, his picture was in my office for decades.

The Bear was an all time great football coach, legend of his era and drank like a fish. Cheated in his profession with the best and was never caught with a live boy or dead girl. A southern Mans Man. End of story.
