I wouldn’t go that far. Trammel was awesome and Joe Willie would have easily been a 5 star. Stabler wasn’t built by Bear. But I still would bet Bear. One tough SOB Arkansian.

It’s close, but I have to go with Saban.

If not for recency bias this would be how I feel. However there has been more parity during Saban's time. I feel like you have to give it to him.

Saban's run at Bama has been absolutely incredible and in my opinion will not be matched now that we have NIL, the portal, along with the soon to be expanded CFP. But for me, as one growing up in the 60's and the early to mid 70's, I've got to go with the Bear. Wouldn't it be great to see these two college football giants battle teams head to head? 20 games played between them probably would be split 10-10. No doubt about it, they are the two greatest in CF history.

Yep I agree. Saban was never on probation or had wins stripped

Bear paved the way for Saban at Alabama. That said, Saban.
He was able to do it at LSU, a program that had been sleeping for 50 years before Saban showed up and shook them awake.
Um, Bear did it at KENTUCKY- won the SEC
and at aTm with the SWC
I’d say that is more impressive than pulling it together at LSU…

What evidence shows it’s harder to win championships now
First, Bryant won all of his in the polls; not on the field.
Second, there were no scholarship limits.
Bryant didn’t have success anywhere else.

Saban and it’s not close. Saban is a probably the best recruiter the CFB has ever had. He will get thru this lean year like Bryant did a few times. I think he has at least 1 more championship in him especially with 12 teams next year.

Bryant’s teams were mostly in state kids. Saban’s teams, and any other powerhouse team nowadays, are basically national high school all star teams.
Recruiting and scouting have to be enormously different in the Saban and Bryant eras.
I coached high school from 2002-2021. In my early days I had to meet another coach halfway on Saturday morning to swap VHS tapes for scouting. It was enormously helpful when we started doing that shite online around 2008-2010.
With today’s technology, if Saban hears about some badass LB from Odessa, Texas, he can call (or have someone call) and have film on that kid to evaluate within the hour. How would Bryant have evaluated a LB from Odessa, Texas, in 1970?

The Bear. He won with mostly Alabama boys.

People baselessly say this all the time. What evidence shows it’s harder to win championships now? The playoff era has had less parity than any other CFB era.
Yes there are scholarship limits now. National recruiting and scouting is also infinitely easier now than it was in Bryant’s era.
If the talent was so skewed during Bryant’s era, why did the NFL draft not reflect that?
The talent wasn't "skewed" in Bryant's era. Most teams played with local talent.
What was different is that offenses weren't very good compared to today. (Talking about the 1960s) Now days teams who aren't very good are still dangerous. Not so in the olden days.
More importantly, teams played a regional schedule back then. Even in the non con. And bowl games didn't count in the rankings until the late '60s.

I would argue that it's easier. Mulligans are a lot more frequent now than ever before. Bryant didn't have the luxury. Had we been awarding national champions in the present day as we were back in the 60s and 70s, Saban would have likely missed out on national championships in 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017.
This. Also going undefeated didn’t guarantee you a championship. It was dependent on the mood of the northern, Midwest and west coast sports writers whether you would be “crowned”. Good luck if Michigan, Notre Dame or USC had less than 2 losses in your undefeated season.

Saban and not even close. Also, What he also did with last year's bullshite roster was one of the best coaching jobs in recent memory.

If it was based off of this season alone, Saban wouldn’t even be in this conversation.
Saban isn't even remotely close to the problem this year. Not his fault the QB and OL are garabge.

Not winning the division with the #1 pick at QB and best defensive player in the country?

Are you stupid?

Outside of those Two and Gibba, that team was absolute dog shite. How they won 11 games was incredible.
