It’s kinda wild, coming into the season it seemed like UGA was going to need to lean on what should have been improved pitching to make up for the loss of Condon and Collins at the plate.

It is strange that Georgia is struggling with Pitching since Wes is a Pitching Coach. Perhaps he's a good coach, but a bad recruiter and/or evaluator?

Skenes fell in his lap at LSU.

What other good pitchers has he coached?

Our pitching was really good while he was here. He was the pitching coach for our title game team in 2018. It's why I'm such a huge fan of him.

Blaine Knight, Isaiah Campbell, and Kevin Kopps immediately come to mind.

I don’t know if it’s his coaching methods, evaluation, or what. There is a degree of him trying to make Stricklin’s holdovers and some portal guys work. Weve operated with a shortage of pitchers for years through the Stricklin era so he at least upgraded the bullpen; we aren’t going to run out of arms this season like we did last and years prior. But Kolten Smith has been ill and Goldstein is coming back from TJ so 2 of his starters from last year are already in a hole. The other guys just aren’t attacking the strike zone with any confidence. The entire staff is walking and hitting batters far above the norm. It’s like they all have the yips

loses in the finals, head coach poached by arch instate rival right after that loss, pre season #1 only to be barely above .500 by March 17th.

That is some serious PAIN

The yips is definitely a thing, and once you have it, good fricking luck getting rid of it..

Either way, Wes Johnson has Georgia in the Top 10 after almost making Omaha last year, so he is clearly doing a lot of things right. It's really just a question of where he wants to coach at this point.

I could see A&M make a play for him. Risky from their point of view though, as he might want to leave for Arkansas at some point.

We shouldn't be ranked. Besides our starting pitching, this team is dog shite.

I’ve seen catchers have it here over the years and it can tank your career for sure. Never seen a whole pitching staff with it, though. May not even be the yips but for every guy to have the same issues with control it’s got to be either coaching or something mental or both.

He’s definitely not someone I want to see kicked to the curb. Track record is way too good and proof of concept is still there to the point that we are attracting a lot of interest from recruits and portal guys that we wouldn’t have even been considerations for under Stricklin. We’ve also more or less given him the keys to the kingdom and a fat wallet to spend as he needs. Foley is a completely different venue this year with the upgrades and while the turf is annoying to purists like me, it’s his baby and he has big plans for owners going to use it postseason. We also have a phase 2 for Foley in the works that will transform left field so we’re not done building by a long shot.

A&M actually showed some interest in Johnson last season after Schloss bolted which is why we gave him a fat extension. Every indicator and statement from Wes thus far have been this is where he wants his last coaching stop to be before retirement but we know how coaches (especially baseball coaches) can be. All we can do is make his job easier and make it harder for him to walk away (which our admin is finally doing after 10+ years of penny pinching the sport on the heels of making the CWS every other year).

I am not using the RPI in the average. In a few weeks, I think it will be another good tool to use, but the numbers aren't there yet.

Considering their overall record, I'm presuming that LSU is so low in RPI is because their OOC schedule is fairly weak?

I'm just curious. It clearly won't matter if they do well in the conference considering how high up everyone is; I just find it surprising to see such a huge discrepancy when you contrast everyone else's average ranking and their RPI (not including the bottom 3, the next biggest different is Ole Miss, which is 13.7 below it's RPI; LSU is 56 away from their RPI).

Surprises from week 1 of SEC play for me...

- Texas A&M really does seem to be bad. Real bad. They scored 6 runs all weekend.
- Arkansas, Georgia, and LSU all had multiple double digit runs scored games this weekend.
- Rough weekend for Florida on the road. I expected them to take one.
- Auburn/Vanderbilt series was closer than I expected and Auburn had the big hit late Sunday to take the series.
- Offensive firepower in the league seems to be at an all time high

I went to the SR last year, but I haven't been yet this year. What has changed? What other plans are in the works?

Definitely, and if he continues to be successful there, that helps the program even if he leaves, as it will be easier to get the next guy to take the job.

Ty Floyd made massive strides under Johnson. Wen't from a kid with one pitch and struggled to record outs to a 1st round draft pick.

Garrett Edwards got a lot better. Season in 2023 was cut short due to TJ, but he was still drafted and got paid.

Thatcher Hurd made great strides throughout the 2023 season. He was awful last year and regressed big time (after Johnson was gone) but was a big part of why LSU won the 2023 CWS.

Riley Cooper became one of the more reliable long relief dudes LSU has had in awhile. Got much better from 2022 to 2023.

The rest of the pitchers LSU relied on in 2023 were freshman or incoming transfers, so it's hard to say what effect Johnson had on them

I had the same thought. The RPI still has some issues, but it's getting closer to the ELO each week, except for LSU, but they started off really low in the RPI, so it's going to take some time.

As you said, it will work itself out with SEC play, starting this weekend. If they win the series, I would expect a big jump in their RPI.

They clearly showed up in Omaha in 2023, and that turned out to be the difference. I didn't think y'all had a chance after losing to Wake, and I think most college baseball fans thought the same, including LSU fans.

In addition to now being all turf, the entire left field line has been transformed into a new locker room, pitching lab, expanded batting cages, coaches offices, fan seating, and plaza area (if you were there last May, this area was just a large temporary grand stand and grounds crew area). The awning that only covered the area behind home plate has also been expanded to cover the entire stadium. New premium area has been added to the top of the first base side, right field has gone from some small portable bleachers to a multi tiered beer garden at the base of where a ton of the students congregate at the houses on top of the hill (off campus).

The most immediate is a new parking deck will be built just beyond the left field wall. What’s unique though is is that they are supposedly working on designs that will somehow incorporate a left field seating area into the design. Right now, it’s just a large parking lot beyond the trees in left field.

There is also going to be something more permanent done in right field eventually but left is going to get the immediate attention.
