He's doing an AMA on Reddit's college football forum. One of the interesting positions he had was:

I told a BCS defensive coordinator once that my dream team would be made of all players rated an 89 (high 3stars on 247SPorts). Those guys are all borderline four-stars talent-wise but have upside and a chip on their shoulder.

but he started his statement with this...

I'll put it this way, give me the roster full of freak athletes and I'll beat your roster full of coachable players.

ah the famous 5.7 3 stars

Fap material for fans of teams that don't recruit as well as others.

looks like Arky had zero 89s sign last year

I would take the roster full of 4 and 5 star guys. However, I do think 3 star guys have a lot of value to a team like Bama or LSU. You need a good blend of those guys who come in knowing they are at the bottom of the ladder but work their arse off enough to get the attention of the 4 and 5 star guys on the team. I would not want my whole team to be 3 stars though.

I understand the point he is making...however anyone in their right mind is going to choose the team of 4-5 stars over the 3 star team

True, but sometimes the talent difference between a 4.7 3 star and a 4.8 4 star is negligible at best.

Sorry for trying to add a little bit of football talk.
This post had nothing to do with Arkansas until some of you MADE it about Arkansas.
Is Arkansas the only team in the SEC that signs high 3 stars? Nope. We all do.
We undervalue 3 star guys too often. "Oh, he's ONLY a 3 star" while getting super excited about a 4 star. That's understandable, but 3 stars have plenty of talent and Barton mentions that "chip on their shoulder."

I'd still take a team full of 4 and 5 star guys. Chances are even if those guys don't play to their full potential, they're probably still going to give you more than your average 3 star guy. For every 3 star guy that plays his way into a draft pick, there's always going to be several others who just play to 3 star potential.
And in this conference, unless you have a coach that's great at developing lower level talent, you'll still be on the outside looking in.

absolutely, from a probability standpoint. People always like to use the 1-3 star first round draft picks as examples of recruiting/coaching, but they are outliers to the whole

Mike Evans was a 5.6 on Rivals.
Johnny Manziel a 5.7.
Recruiting services aren't always right.
It depends on the position too. If you need them to play right away, you prefer a 4-star or higher.
If you can develop them and coach them up (especially on the lines when, in many cases, the player isn't done growing), high 3-stars are usually a safer bet.
