I disagree. I don't think that defense was even close to this one
really? I feel like Ro McClain was a star at MLB. javy was an assasin at CB. plus Mount Cody and Dareus on the DLine.
this group was really great, but i feel like that group had a slight edge, mostly because of McClain

Here's the offenses your team faced:
This year's team might have put up the best stats ever. But, there is no way of knowing if it is even top 25 based on the horrible offenses you played.

Kent State (119th)
Ole Miss (114th)
Florida (105th)
Tennessee (104th)
Auburn (100th)
Vanderbilt (98th)
North Texas (96th)
Penn State (95th)
LSU (86th)
Mississippi State (84th)
Arkansas (29th)

I think it might be. It's definitely in the discussion for sure.
ETA: Which makes it even more impressive that LSU (with avg QBs at best) was able to go into BDS and beat Bama this season. Damn strong. Unfortunately it led to overconfidence going into a rematch for the BCS title and ultimately failure in that game.

You'd have a point if the stats Bama put up were common occurences. Fact of the matter is, no defense has put up stats like that in 25 years.

according to LSU fans Jefferson was really good. A legit QB. He was better than Lee. He was what sparked you to vicotry in T'town.
I'd say Bama made Jefferson look worse than he is instead of him making Bama look better.
If you want to consider just future NFL players on this Defense it might be the best ever:
Upshaw - 1st rnd projection
Dre - 1st rnd projection
Barron - 1st rnd projection
Hightower - 2nd rnd projection
Chapman - 2/3rd rnd projection
Menzie - 2/3rd rnd projection
Johnson - 2nd rnd projection
Mosley - 1/2nd rnd projection
Lester - 2/3rd rnd projection
Williams - 2/3rd rnd projection
Milliner - 3/4th rnd projection
that is an incredibly talented group. find one better.

One of the best for sure...

Hard to argue with that. If it's not its in the top 2.

As far as NFL talent goes, Miami 01' will likely never be dethroned.
Posted on 1/20/12 at 2:03 pm to bamabeast12
It's definently up there for consideration.
All though I find it interesting that before the game, quite a few Bama fans were saying 09/92 was better, but they seem to have hopped on the 11 bandwagon now. (Not all, but quite a few)

I don't know where you got that number but the average offense Bama faced was 87th. Yes not a big difference, but still. And average scoring was 70th. Now that being said, Alabama took out two QB this season early in games. Brantley and whoever Vandy's first starter was, so those numbers are still skewed. Now I also only counted LSU once and averaged it out of 12 games so I don't know what you would get if you added them twice; and yes I added GSU because that team showed what happens when you're coached well and know how to execute. Also want to add our offense helped out a lot in those numbers as well because of TOP, being ranked twelfth in the nation with an average of 32:48.
Anyways, no flame towards comment just wanted to point that out.

This says it all plus some of the backups that played will be drafted high.Trey Depriest , Stinson,Hubbard etc.

Simple math of the above offensive rankings puts the average around 94.6.

I would say near the top if not at the top of the list, but I respectfully decline to participate in the circle jerk

I do not think that this is even the best defense in the tides history. I know I'm showing my age but the 61 defense was one of a kind.

Auburn 88 was also very good, gave up only 92 points for the season.. Lost in the Earthquake game to LSU 7-6... Would have played for a nattie if not for that late TD and Dye's conservative play calling..
Saw somewhere that Auburns '88 D was statistically the best in the last 50 years. Actually better than '86 Oklahoma and '00/'01 Miami. So they were definitely a beast.
Only thing that skews all this IMO is that offenses are baseline more potent now then they were even ten years ago. So really it's hard to compare. But shutting teams down is the name of the game and the '11 Bama D was awesome at it. Only 8 TDs given up all year, in this day and age, that is awesome.
I don't care if the average offense they faces is in the 90's as far as rankings are concerned, in this day and age practically all Offenses can put some points on the board.
I don't want to say they were the best, those early 2000's Miami teams were stocked with NFL talent, I just don't remember their games to see if it translated into college success. I know they were dominant, just don't know how dominant they were.
I'd give '11 Bama a top five modern day defensive ranking, skewing a little because of better modern offenses and rules that favor them.
