Alabama really screwed everything because if they make the SEC title game and lose then the committee will have to break a claim that the tournament games dont matter

That was something they said last year. I don't think they have said that this year. Having said that the conferences will revolt if they go and make their cash cow championship games irrelevant. So I think that does hold true for this season as well.

More and more though it is a punishment to have to play those games.

It will depend on where Bama is prior to championship game. If everyone holds serve, Bama will be behind 4 other SEC teams for sure. If they’re sitting at 11 or below, their only path is to win the SEC because they wouldn’t have made it regardless. Selection committee might put them there for cover incase that happens.

That isn't the topic of this conversation. Valid question, but we're talking about the ranking that will come out this week.

That being said, why would the committee just bump OU 1 spot after beating #4 Bama on the road? I can't see that happening.

Why isn’t Ole Miss eligible for the championship game?

I think Ole Miss still has a path to the SEC championship game, but it’s very very slim.

I think Ol' Miss' path is Texas beating A&M. Also Bama is no longer a lock if they beat Auburn.

SMU was 11-1 entering ACC championship game and lost on last second field goal and finished 11-2

Alabama would be entering SEC Championship game at 10-2 and would be 10-3 if they lose in whatever manner.

So comparing them to SMU from last season - SMU woould have 1 more win and 1 fewer losses than a 10-3 Bama. The committee looks at wins and loses so a comparison to last years SMU team isn't apples to apples. SOS clearly no longer matters and you have to beat who is on your schedule. Loss to 5-5 FSU is killing Bama right now that a very bad loss.
