The 60,000+ that show up every year to watch Alabama A&M and Alabama State play say bullshite.

Both those schools are 150 years old and cater to a niche demographic. UAB is 40 years old with a 30 yr old athletic program and a 20 year old football program.

Alabama State also has an on campus stadium, located right off the interstate in downtown Montgomery, similar to what UAB wants to build.

Here we have an obvious program that is not pulling its weight

This is really idiotic. So now you need to kill all sports at 99% of schools because they sure as crap don't pull their weights.

What is even more funny is all the UAT fans on here running UAB into the ground. They are part of YOUR system. If they are failing it is UAT's fault. UAT is the parent company.

The only reason UAB football is not self sustaining is because the UA BOT has worked to prevent that from happening for years

That is a fact and any Gump claiming otherwise is one of two things and two things only.

1. Ignorant of the facts and history

2. A liar

That is all their is to be said, period.

60,000 football fans are more than happy to show up for a football game at Legion Field and even tailgate. Just not UAB fans.

All of which is completely irrelevant. The few UAB fans that exist want to yap about Legion Field. There's nothing about Legion Field that prevents 60,000 people from showing up for a game. The bottom line is that UAB's football program is a drain on taxpayers. It's a fricking joke.

Good, total waste of money. UA is tired of funneling money to a program that loses $3 to 4 mil per year.

Wasn't last week's thread about just that? The alumni and boosters were trying to get an athletic fund so that can avoid the BOT. Less than a week later the BOT is trying to shut them down.

You people are all fricking idiots for getting your news from places like SB Nation.

The study was commissioned by the UAB presidents office as part of the long term strategic planning (the same one that eliminated 23 positions from UAB Medicine today).

This has nothing to do with the BoT.

I don't understand why it's sooo hard for Bama fans to grasp why UAB wants their own athletic facilities and stadium. Colleges/Universities within Jefferson County who have on-campus stadium
-Miles College
-Birmingham Southern
-Samford

These programs manage to run entire athletic departments with minimal interference. Why can't UAB be allowed to do the same???

Just because you say this doesn't make it true. using the MCC as an example is beyond irrelevant.

Got a link for that? Because this one says bullshite.

"As the Athletic Department at the University of Alabama is 100% self-supporting, all private gifts contribute directly to the needs of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. UA Athletics receives no funding from the State of Alabama. In fact, the University of Alabama Athletic Department has never received funds from the State's taxpayers."

We understand why they want one. We just don't care if they get it or not.

1 there is zero alumni support
2 they operate at such a loss, they have cut academic programs.
3 throwing money at a flawed product is a fool's investment.
4 who cares?

You're an idiot. The Magic City Classic is the iron bowl of historically black colleges. It's a week long spectacle. And you're being a dolt if you're trying to compare one game and it's fanbase to the doctor alumni of UAB and season worth of games.

Seems like if all these Auburn fans who double as UAB fans would donate to the UAB program than they might actually be able to survive and thrive.

Could they change the name of the school from UAB to AUB?

Sounds like a win/win situation.

UAB folks see legal separation on the horizon, UA folks dont think they can pull it off. guess we will find out soon.

If I recall correctly, there was talk a year or two ago from a Vestavia legislator who proposed a separation of the system.

Would be interesting to see how the battle lines were drawn. Would lawmakers be loyal to their constituency or Bama. UAB is Jefferson County's greatest and most important asset. Bama boosters thinking they can just waltz in and break apart the school as they see fit could be in for a very rude awakening.

These schools are all private schools. I've lived in Birmingham for 16 years and 99% of the UAB alumni, students, faculty and staff that I know don't give a damn about their football program. If they don't, why should I?
