There are rules in the NFL I think about not imitating a snap count / call and that can be a penalty on the defense - not sure about college ball but trying to imitate a snap call isn't really "gamesmanship" IMO.

Not that any of that matter because this is all bullshite - just pointing out the rule.

On the other play Trigga Tray Matthews does clap, but he is looking at another AU player trying to get his attention. Matthews is AU's "QB" in the secondary, so this is normal.

That makes sense. It's probably a downside to using the clap as your snap count.

It wasn’t even a one score game at that point, wouldn’t have mattered.

I live in gump/barner territory so always enjoy the week after iron bowl. Militant level bama guy claims the two missed snaps were caused by AU defenders clapping during bama snap counts. Therefore, AU cheated and doesn't count.
I can't find anyone even talking about this, and too lazy to watch replay of the game.

Any validity to this? Again this is coming from a Gaytor so I am not trying to start sh1t. Well that is a lie, but I know I will get honest answers from both sides here.

I have actually gone back & looked at the clapping stuff. Buckle up people, here comes some clapping analysis

Clap 1 - Totally Intentional

Watch Tray Matthews at top of screen. He does a little down low clap & Bama's OT jumps resulting in a false start penalty. FWIW next play AU committed PI so it ended up not mattering

Clap 2 - Incidental Clapping

Again it's Matthews but I don't think this one was intentionally trying to get Bama to jump. Looks like he's trying to get someone's attention to either make a call or get a call. Either way it causes Bama to snap the ball before Hurts is ready

Clap 3 - Dumb Clapping

The final clapping moment is Bo trying to get the attention of the center to point out a blitz. Unfortunately for him, clapping is what Bama was using to snap the ball. As well all know this play was chaos

So there you have it. The best clapping breakdown you will ever see on this site

And this is what every sane Bama fan is saying. We have our idiots, but the vast majority of us aren't blaming the refs for getting our arse kicked.

I'm a little curious about that one. There are 2 Auburn players who react to Matthews clapping. The OLB/DE right in front of Matthews along with the DT get into a ready position at the clap. I didn't watch the game, but it's possible that Matthews was signaling the defense. Possibly something about all calls and adjustments having been made?

I don't think a legitimate signal that your team has planned would be one that would result in a penalty if the refs see it. He knew what he was doing. I've seen our guys do it too. It needs to be policed better.

I mean it's possible. Hard to actually know why someone is or isn't clapping but I feel pretty confident the first one was to get Bama to jump. Everyone does it

If we're going to do it, I wish we'd at least do it effectively. Your guys didn't jump. Who is AU's clapping coach? We might need to steal him. Our clappers are weak in space.

They were clapping, I saw it multiple times, but was not sure of the legality of clapping. Though that is the shape count today from shotgun.

Don't forget illegal formation too (there were 5 in the backfield.) Refs just weren't ready because they were waiting for everyone to line up. Big screw up for them but at least it didn't matter in the long run.

Right answer. The only human being in the stadium that expected the snap to happen when it did was Bradley Bozeman. The refs on the field didn't flag either penalty because they, like everyone else, were saying WTF just happened?

I was glad to get the break (which was promptly wasted), but it was pretty petty for replay to buzz that in given the situation.

But you're allowed to clap. I'm not sure what would cross the line from a defensive player clapping to get his teammates' attention to being simulating the snap. I am not trying to say Matthews WASN'T just trying to get a Bama player to jump. It was just something I noticed with his teammates reacting to it.

Whats next, its cheating to call "hike" by the defense? lol

Technically, that is a penalty.

The rule that the defense must comply with IMO is pretty clear (7.1.5.a. Defensive Team Requirements) " 3. No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. No player may call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of (or otherwise interfere with) offensive starting signals."

So no, you may not clap as the defensive player if the offense is using clapping. You may not mimic the cadence or calls the offense uses. NCAA rules.
