I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but our next coach won't be on Saban's level. You most likely won't see another one like him in your lifetime. Enjoy it.

I think it would be a mistake to hire anyone other than Smart. He HAS to know the system like the back I his hand. With him, I think it would come down to have a head coach mentality and attitude. If they think he does, hire him. If not, don't.
ETA: If Jumbo or someone on that level is knocking down the door then by all means scoop em up. If not, Smart. I also junk it would be easier to hire a too flight coach after has a couple down years, if that happens.

I have to ask this because the people that want Smart to become the successor to Satan have said he is just like him in that he coaches just like him. Does Smart like Saban? It is well known that many assistant coaches under Saban did not like working for the dwarf. Smart may be so glad that Saban leaves and does things his own way. This could come back to bight Bama in the arse if that is the case. Nick is very hands on with the Defense that Smart may have no other way of coaching besides Nicks way.

Knowing the system means nothing. Grad assistants know the system. It takes a lot more than a system to make a goof head coach.
