I have them ALL beat, I live in Montgomery (prayers needed) and it's a pure, unadulterated shithole. It started declining +25 yrs ago and now it's dead and stinking.

Apparently you didn't.

I know a few people who work in Montgomery, but commute from Auburn. It all starts with the School Systems, cities have not figured that out after all these years.

Outside of a portion of the eastern end of the city, Montgomery is a dreadful depressing city. It's basically a large version of Selma. You couldn't pay me enough to live there. Prattville, on the other hand, is nice but that's a suburb and not really part of Montgomery proper.
The Huntsville/Madison area is really nice as is the Eastern Shore, GS/OB, and Baldwin County in general (especially Fairhope)
Auburn is nice as are the sections of Tuscaloosa north and west of the Black Warrior River out towards Northport and Lake Tuscaloosa.
Large portions of the Birmingham metro area from the Southside/Five Points/UAB area and south and east of there are really nice but the rest of metro B'ham sucks pretty badly.
Mobile, like New Orleans proper but on a smaller scale, has pockets of nice areas mixed together with really crappy areas. On a positive note, the Mobile area in general is way more laid back and less uptight than the rest of the state.
Outside of the aforementioned areas, Alabama is a mixture of really crappy small to middle sized towns and a handful of tolerable cities and towns along with a surprising amount of natural beauty thrown in.
The few great spots in Alabama are as good as most of the better places in Georgia.

I agree with most of your assessment of both states. Beaches in Alabama are much nicer than those near Savannah. St Simmons is a nice area. Savannah is still the best city in GA, Columbus is a typical Military town but has gotten better recently. We have talked about the issues in Atlanta. You are short changing North Alabama and its natural beauty. Even the Shoals area gets overlooked for beauty. Hard to find a town that compares to Guntersville in Ga and even Eufaula has a lot of Southern Charm. Huntsville is the one area that is blowing everyone out of the water. I do not know how long they can keep it up, but in 10 years they will be the most talked about city in the South.

We are currently doing work on 2 huge apartment projects there and have bid 3 more. Lots of growth there!

Pike Road is it's own City and their public schools have drawn tons of formerly private school kids from Montgomery. The Montgomery private schools have seen a 30-35% drop in enrollment in the last 3 yrs because parents are moving to Pike Road and sending kids to school for free. I had no choice when my kids were school age, I paid over $250,000 to send my two kids K-12 to private school here because there was no other alternative at the time.

The issue for Huntsville compared to Atlanta is most of the jobs there can not be done remotely. All those Fortune 500 Companies HQs will be be doing most of the work remotely in the future. Why put up with a shitty city if you do not have to?

I've been here 23 years (straight from Auburn) and I've been pretty happy here. Maybe many of us who live here don't consider it a "shitty city." There are shitty parts like anywhere else, but there's tons of good things and things to do (well, you know, before this bullshite now.)

I was born in Huntsville and lived there when I was little so I have a bit of a special place in my heart for the city. You're right, the Huntsville area is a great high tech alternative for engineering, aerospace, and even biomedical professionals that want a quieter, less crowded alternative to the increasingly crowded Nashville area and to a lesser extent the crowded Atlanta area. The local economy there is fantastic as long as the federal government doesn't slash defense spending and is diversified enough even when cuts do occur to still do well. The city and areas nearby have a ton of natural beauty, a solid school system, and overall it's a great place to raise a family. It's definitely the Alabama city of the future.
Definitely didn't mean to sell the natural beauty of North Alabama short. Lake Guntersville, the DeSoto State Park area, the Mt Cheaha area, and even the Monte Santo area of Huntsville are some of the most underrated spots for outdoors in the South.
As for Georgia, I agree the Savannah area is great. St. Simons Island and Jeckyll Island are really nice as well. The Blue Ridge mountains area of North Georgia is also spectacular. The Lake Oconee area east of Atlanta and then you Athens which is one of the great college towns in America.
As for Atlanta, it's undoubtedly a world class city but the insane amount of traffic along with the effect its rapid growth is having on its local politics and even more alarmingly is starting to have on its state's electoral politics takes a lot away from its many positives in my opinion. Seriously, with everything on the line with the Georgia Senate races, how do Georgians manage to elect two radical far left Senators? I can sort of understand not voting for Trump, but purposely choosing two senators who for all intents and purposes are socialists? Tells you everything you need to know about what the Atlanta area has become and where it's headed.

I like how radical far-left is wanting to raise the minimum wage and give people Medicare. But the radical far right is attacking your own government in a fail putsch.

Very much so, but Abrams wasn't running for Senate. She didn't lie to Georgians while she pocketed more cash. Loeffler may have been one of the worst candidates ever in a Senate race. Shame on Kemp for nominating her in the first place.

Something tells me your issues fall along your Party lines. No way an independent minded individual would vote for the Democratic Party platform and call themselves a southerner, unless of course they have always aligned themselves with that form of thinking.

Yeah the people who get their opinions told to them by AM radio are the independent minded folks.
