Does it apply to forum post or just twitter? There are a lot of folks on tidessports that need to be investigated for the theories they are posting.
The fake twitter account was clearly a joke, I see Christmas lights, etc. In poor taste, but criminal? We really need to prioritize crimes.

Interfering with a Gov't operation.
eta - Been a long time.. it's actually obstruction of a gov't operation.
Section 13A-10-2 - Obstructing governmental operations.
(a) A person commits the crime of obstructing governmental operations if, by means of intimidation, physical force or interference or by any other independently unlawful act, he:
(1) Intentionally obstructs, impairs or hinders the administration of law or other governmental function; or
(2) Intentionally prevents a public servant from performing a governmental function.
Causing enforcement to have to investigate and check him out, impairs their ability to conduct their investigation on actual real leads.

Thank you for making my point. Reading the tweets that twitter account made last night, you get the sense that the person behind it - while in poor taste - was clever and intelligent. Bottom line, you could TELL that it wasn't the real guy just by reading the tweets. "I SEE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS." Yeah...that sounds a lot like a desperate man on the run.

And you don't see mine. Suppose the actual suspect tweets and posts, and the police don't investigate, assuming it's a prank. What kind of hell would you expect them to get for not doing so?

That shite was funny. Poor taste? Definitely. Humorous? hell yes

All the police have to do, if they want to make sure, is compare his twitter posts to his Facebook posts (and we know he has a Facebook). I 100% guarantee the grammar and sentence structure does NOT match up.

It's a very good chance it wasn't. But you can't tell anything 100%. You assume. Police in a triple murder investigation, can't assume anything.

So if they had a tip that he went to the moon, they would need to investigate?

There are some things you can tell. Bottom line, had I been the lead investigator, I would have looked at those twitter posts last night and thought nothing of them. Why? Because I don't need to look under every rock to find common sense.

And even if that took 10 minutes, that's 10 minutes devoted to chasing that dead end when it could've been spent chasing other, possibly legitimate leads. Thus "hindering an investigation."

You're not getting it. Investigations are and have to be more thorough than comparing spelling in a couple of posts. The guy wasted resources with his prank. It was a bad idea, and a misdemeanor, as it interfered with an investigation. Sometimes being cute and funny, really isn't. People need to show a little maturity in certain situations.

They don't need to check because police have already seen his Facebook. That's how they knew he was in the Montgomery area in the first place. He had logged onto Facebook yesterday.

If you've ever known someone whose job it is to sift through fake twitter accounts making sure they aren't missing an important lead, you'd disagree.
It's not about the person who did it, or that it's a joke. It's about how much chaos those things might cause in the future if people think they can just start fake twitter accounts.

I don't know. Would you investigate some idiot saying he poisoned a landmark on a call in TV show because his team lost a football game?
Point being. If they prosecuted a few of these idiots for this kind of BS, it would slow it down some

And if you were the lead investigator last night, you would've been trying to figure out if Desmonte was in that house and how to capture him without getting shot. The last thing you wanted to do is chase some stupid twitter feed.

Exactly. It's not hard to make accounts on burn phones and post things to mislead either. Or hand a phone to a friend and have them log into your account while you're somewhere else. There's a clear line between TV:CSI detectives on here, and actual folks that have been around the real thing and know what has to occur in an investigation.

Even if the person gets some kind of citation and has to go to court and the judge dismisses it.It could be enough to make them think twice before being so classless and stupid. The time between the citation and court would leave a lot of thinking time.
