Because when you've dished out 85 million for a new arena, does it make sense to throw tons of cash at a coach at the end of his career? Basketball programs like Alabama, AU, Georgia, etc., are never going to be able to go out and hire the "best of the best". Hiring great young coaches from mid-majors is the best bet, and it has worked well for Tennessee, Florida, and even Alabama in the past (at least for the first few years of the Gottfried era).

Thank you for your interest and concern for Auburn athletics. We appreciate your input.

The AU and Mike Anderson deal went sour when Dr. Richardson got butthurt b/c Anderson refused to come down 280 for an interview. Richardson got his feelings hurt and dropped Anderson.

Would Auburn fans like it if you guys hired Brad Stevens from Butler? He didn't really have a signature win this past season, but he's 85-14 in his three seasons at Butler. Only 33 years old.

Well it seems we can afford him so I don't really see the monetary side of this as it doesn't appear we're emptying the coffers. Other side of the coin. Has hiring a proven coach ever worked in the past?

It has nothing to do with the specifics of Auburn athletics. I said the same things last year when some Georgia fans were convinced Bobby Knight was coming to Athens.

He declined to come down for an interview. So what? Go to Birmingham and convince him to come down and check out what Auburn has to offer. You do that and I'm pretty sure you guys would be set with a great coach in Anderson right now instead of searching for a new coach.

It just seems that all the auburn posters are pro tubby but all the bama posters don't think its the right move. Given the relationships between the fan bases i wonder if its not a bit of contrarianism coming out, and how the feeling would be if the name that surfaced today was "young and exciting"

Not the point...we didn't hire him and we hired lebo. Let's not revisit that mistake.

Alabama fans heard Tubby Smith's name a year ago when Gottfried was fired. Honestly, there were more fans wanting Alabama to hire an up and coming coach like Grant instead of hiring Tubby.

Tubby is a great coach, don't get me wrong, but he's at the point in his career where you have to wonder how much longer he'll be coaching.

Again, for the cheap seats, how is his tenure relevant if we were to strike out again with another jeff lebo?

I guess this will be our burden to bear. Once again, thanks for the help.

Don't be scared to hire a young coach just because Jeff Lebo sucked.

Don't act so butthurt. Most of the Alabama fans have not even talked ill of AU in this thread. Many have just pointed out the obvious, when concerning coaching hires, for SEC programs not named Kentucky.

That young and exciting coaches are the only way to go?

Again i really think you bama fans are looking past the futility that was auburn basketball for the past 7 years..minus a little bit of a spark in the second half of last season. I think if you look at it and see the failure that was lebo you woudl see that if tubby is willing to come to auburn he is a great fit. No "well give him some time" bullshite. He'll come in and provide at least a ray of hope from day 1.

frick that. Auburn University is the employer, Mike Anderson is the employee. You think any company is gonna come to you to do an interview for employment? If the guy doesn't care enough to even come see the campus and facilities, then his interest probably isn't that high anyways.

But we can hire tubby...thats the point. For auburn right now a proven guy is a much better fit.

And Alabama got stuck with Bill Curry over Bobby Bowden for that attitude. Yeah, it worked out with Coach Stallings later on, but it makes you wonder "what could have been?"
