It wasn't automatic. Michigan was actually #1 in both polls.

“No one counts 1957. Auburn has 1 national championship, in 2010, that’s it.“
You really are a stupid updyke. There are a lot of stupid updkes but you rank up there with the most stupidest.

“That’s pretty crazy. I imagine tickets were pricey.”
I was at the 1992 updyke game and I saw a redneck updyke girl pay $900 for a ticket(may have been a pair) said she wanted to see the updykes beat Auburn in Auburn fir the first time, it didnt workout so well for her.

“I'm glad that it sucked for you guys 'cause USC clearly was the best team that year and would've stomped AU had they played each other.”

Fun fact, Auburn was also on probation in 1957 which is a season they claim a NC.
Another fun fact: back then anybody that worked for a newspaper/radio station that carried AP stories could vote in the poll. You didn't have to vote every week. Going into the final poll Auburn contacted as many southern media members as they could and got them to vote in the final poll. In the next to last poll 225 people voted and Auburn moved up to #1 with 88 first place votes(39.1%). In the final poll 360 people voted and Auburn received 210 first place votes (58.3%). Auburn likely would have won but they stuffed the ballot box to make sure they did.

Some Alabama fans pine for the type of football played back then. I suppose every college football fan appreciates a strong defense, but watching Stallings offense was nerve racking for me. I wonder if he privately hated offense. Steve Spurrier changed the game, at least in the SEC.

Poor David Palmer. Just imagine this guy in the spread?

right. That guy would thrive in this offense. If he could ever get a single hand on the ball he'd catch it. When they unpiled, Palmer would have the ball.

I give Stalling credit for putting him at QB late in the Tennessee game. He was lightning in a bottle no matter where you lined him up.

I know that running backs have taken the snap at least since Notre Dame ran that box back in the middle ages, but Palmer under center so often is the first I remember of what is now called the wildcat.
eta for those that never watched him: he was a legitimate threat to pass when he lined up at qb, which made him so effective. In fact, I think he was more accurate and had better touch than Barker, especially in Barker's first 2 years.
