I stopped reading that jokers article when I got to the typo in the first sentence.
I honestly don't see what the big deal is. This has been going on forever. The kid could get the same scholarship as Yeldon, he would just have to come in a few months later. He chose to take an offer elsewhere for another SEC school. What if the kid would have been committed for 6 months, then switched on signing day? Would this big of a deal be made? NCAA football is a business.

I guess I just don't feel that bad for guys that greyshit. I wish I could have gotten a free ride after only waiting 5 months. I know that extra time helps some people. I was at prattville high when Travis mccall was greyshirting. He was taking a few classes to help his grades and practically lived in the weight room when he wasn't in class.

He knew the possibilities. We flipped a couple of DL late. I guess he didn't think it would happen.
It is more than likely he was aware of a posssible grey shirt. I mean its saban after all. If the kid wasnt aware, the he is/was an idiot. But knowing the game, he was more than likely just sold and grey shirt was never brought up until some of the later commitments here in the last weeks.
It is partially his fault for assuming his recruiting was over, he should have at least used his visits to other schools. Unless he preforms greatly at arky there is a strong possibility he transfers close to home after a few years

Question for you Bama folks, Have any of your grey shirts gone on to have productive careers at bama and have any played as sophs or fresh

Hmmm...will the new coach in two years honor those four year deals?
Posted on 2/2/12 at 9:04 am to GonzoLeslie
Well this new approach they took this year sure seems to be working out for them. I'm going to laugh my arse off when 2 years from now half this class does not pan out and Chizik is either stuck with them or finds some excuse to break the contract. In the mean time, Alabama will keep winning and Auburn will keep Bible thumping and all will be well.

Even if, in all evidence to the contrary, he did know, the fact that Bama fans are here in droves defending Saban's pre-processing of 2 players underscores that the rest of us detest them because they are all walking pieces of shite...not because they win. Did you see this kind of hate for Florida or LSU or Texas with their top recruiting classes and national championships? As far as we could all tell, they did it the right way.
It is more than likely he was aware of a posssible grey shirt.

our starting center and soon to be NFLer William Vlachos comes to mind....

I *think* John Parker Wilson was also a greyshirt...

Contrary to what most Bama fans think, this is NOT the NFL and nor should it be. At the end of the day, these are college football teams with student athletes. Hell, even the NFL guys sign contracts for more than one year......

My meaning was he should have been aware of the possibility because it is what saban does. Not that he should have been aware that there was a strong chance that he would grey shirt.

Either way he should have been notified a little longer than a few weeks ago that there was a possibility.
I'm sure Saban will take your concern into account next recruiting season. All I hear year after year from other schools fans is what a big arse Saban is and how his recruiting tactics and disregard for the the kids will catch up with him. Well five years later and either these kids are stupid(in your eyes) or Saban isn't as bad as you make him out to be, because the man keeps bringing in top ranked recruiting classes.
The bottom line is the top recruits each year want to win and a chance to go to the NFL. They know Saban can provide both. Fans of SEC programs have an expectation of winning and don't tolerate much if they don't. Saban is providing the winning and I for one am enjoying like hell the way he is doing it. If Chizik goes 8-5 the next two seasons with two more less than stellar recruiting classes it won't matter if he adopts everyone of his recruits. He will be on the hot seat and more than likely out of a job. Programs don't pay these guys over $3 million dollars a year to become these kids best friends. They are paid to recruit the best athletes and win football games. I'm sorry Auburn is not doing that to the level Bama is at the moment, but I am glad your coach is the moral standard all others should try to emulate.

I'm not one to criticize Saban because the guy does win and Bama fans will defend him no matter what, but the way Philon was handled was pretty shitty. With the way that kid reacted, it looks like he was blindsided with the news.

Sounds to me like a good excuse for Aubies to use in their upcoming losses.

negative...redshirted. One of my favorite Bama players...he was what a lot of us hoped Clint Mosely was...a gamer and a winner that was such a competitor, he overcame some of his lacking physical attributes.

John Parker Wilson
Vlachos
Travis McCall
Off the top of my head. I want to say Josh Chapman was a greyshirt, but may be getting him confused with someone else.

But minus a signing bonus the contracts are not for certain.
But yes CFB is not the NFL

I have no problem with actual greyshirting if the kid is told about it in advance(we dont know for sure when Philon was told)
So then why are the AU fans and this reporter bitching about this when in fact the reporter and fans are admitting that they have no idea when Philon was warned that he might have to greyshirt?

Uh, being a greyshirt still allows you to redshirt if necessary later on. They still have five years to play four.
