Not all media by any means. But there is no way you can tell me the Paul Finebaums of the world don't antagonize and fuel the hate. As far as the message boards go, you've got people who post behind anonymity and are willing to say things and instigate much more than they would in the past. And no, I don't believe message boards are a true indication of a fanbase. I've got tons of friends who don't post on message boards and are much more level headed than those that do, myself included.
