“There is a silent majority of very rational fans who keep the rivalry in perspective,” she said.

Those fans are largely white-collar professionals, said Wayne Flynt, distinguished professor emeritus of history at Auburn. “Decent, good people who never took the rivalry as serious because they’ve got a life after football,” he said.

Flynt, editor in chief of the online Encyclopedia of Alabama, characterized the more obsessed as primarily working-class “pickup-truck alumni” who matriculated to neither university and whose lives are a struggle.

It is a gross stereotype but he is right in my opinion.

I blame it on the media, blogs and message boards. And yes, I realize I contribute.

I'd say that's pretty accurate... but I think the professor is probably referencing the 1988 Chevy pickup-truck alumni - as opposed to the 2009 Toyota Tundra King Cab alumni.

Yes. And I imagine it would be hurtful to someone that supports a program, monetarily or otherwise, at a school which they didn't attend.

Will "pickup-truck alumni" be a new term that we call the Gumps?

Prof. Flynt knows the subject matter...of that there is no doubt.

We may have an opportunity here to replace the overused "sidewalk fan" with the more modern and hip "pickup-truck alumni."

i've heard this for years and, if you really think about it, it doesn't hold up. surely, that many people do not take action based on what they read or see or hear from the media. in general, are we that stupid? we being the human race. are you saying we should outlaw the media? or just control it? maybe let the government decide what we read, hear and see? maybe i'm a cynic, or just an old fart, but i believe very little of what i read or hear from anyone, media or not. this is because most of it is garbage or at least motivated by some kind of hidden agenda.

exactly

i guess he thinks the media just makes up stories about trashy fans and blogs and message boards aren't a true indicator of a fanbase. guess those are just phantoms posting all over the internet.

This can't be blamed on the media. Fans were acting stupid long before message boards and the 24/7 news cycle were present.

Honestly, I think Flynt hit the nail on the head.

Hey, I like that first truck you posted. Would look better with about 12 inches of lift though.

And FWIW, a HUGE part of merchandising and football tickets sales go to these "pickup truck alumni" so dont bite the hand that feeds you imo.
