Laugh all you want. The negative effects of "service tourism" on communities are well documented. Of course, they will never say, "No." You bring presents. Mission trips benefit those who go on the mission. It never hurts to be exposed to true poverty and what it really means to scratch out a subsistence living. I suppose short-term mission trips are good for that.

People that want to help over a period of months or years are good. They integrate into the community and know what the frick is going on, but I can't stand service tourism.

Well, these are college kids, so a period of months/years isn't exactly possible for them.

Should they just stay home and not try to help? Doing nothing is more beneficial than doing something?
