Atlanta was the only city from an SEC state that was on the Soviet Union’s nuke list.

Much like during the civil war, Atlanta was the primary city in the southeast for the transportation of goods. Blow up Atlanta and the entire southeast would unravel.

You know, I have a book that has a list of projected nuclear strikes on US targets by the Soviet Union and it was considerably more extensive than that.
Now, admittedly, while the Soviet Union was extant, Arkansas wasn't an SEC state.. but Little Rock was a target, Pensacola was a target, Shreveport was a target.. just to name a few.

Atlanta may have been the only “major” city due to being a transportation hub, but surely the Soviets would have wanted to wipe out smaller places that have military bases and refining capacity as well. They’d be stupid if they only focused on one factor.
