He never said he was the one engaged in the inappropriate relationship... the wording of his release is rather perfect really... we assume he was protecting his relationship, and assume he was cheating on his wife because he apologized to her... but he also apologized to his kids and everyone else... read the statement from a different angle...
He lied to protect a bad situation of some kind from becoming public, but it was not an affair with JD...

I get wishful thinking and vague talking, but there would really be no reason for him to apologize to his family if it wasn't him involved.
Also, I understand him wanting to protect his son, but he has a whole of a hell lot more to lose in this than his son, and no reason for his son not to take the blame in this situation imo.
