Memphis investigated and cleared him. The NCAA feels it is reasonable that they should have caught it in their investigation as a 3rd party monitoring service was looking into it as well and eventually determined there to be wrongdoing.
This is the first thing that could bite aTm. The NCAA could well say "y'all saw the video, you should have known" and you're screwed.

The case seems rather arbitrary
And this is the second. Arbitrary is the standard operating procedure when it comes to NCAA violations. A UGA player and an Alabama player go to a party in Miami. UGA player gets 4 games, Bama player gets 2.
Players in multiple sports from Alabama, Ball State, Temple, Weber State and Texas State-San Marcos figure out they can scam the textbook system. Alabama sees wins vacated, the other programs do not.
Much like JFF, the NCAA does what it wants when it wants regardless of how it looks.

IMO, the NCAA knows they cant nail with what they currently have and are stringing it out to both one, assert their "power" after all the recent criticisms of them and two, try and get someone else to come forward with something tangible.
Ultimately, they will make A&M make the decision for them unless else comes out. Either we'll sit him and they'll claim "victory" for a few weeks before dropping the investigation or we play him and it just goes away. In that scenario, hopefully we'd call their bluff.

Is this thing over yet? I figured we would hear a statement by A&M by now.

I imagine the lawyers have told them not to say anything. Why bother at this point? Nothing they say is going to change anything. Either the NCAA has him or they don't.

FTR, no one but Schad has seen the video and even he says there is no exchange of money on it so I'm not even sure what it matters.
But in this case, the NCAA has as much info as Texas A&M here. If they deem the hearsay of the tape to be enough evidence to warrant a suspension, they can suspend. But if they don't, Texas A&M will not be liable for not doing so either.

I don't really disagree with anything you said, but in the context of 2013 with the current O'Bannon lawsuit I'd think they'd want an airtight he-sure-enough-did-it and here's the proof case. Of course there's 23 days left before the season, and who knows what other bombs might drop in the meantime.

I don't think aTm is liable for a damn thing at this point.
They've covered their asses, they've tried to get JFF counseling and provided (even mandated) he get help for any personal issues he may have.
They've educated him AND his entire family on NCAA compliance for probably the last year. Hell, I'd imagine aTm compliance has had to spend way more time vetting JFF & his family's activities than they have for any other student athlete at the school.

Has this clown been suspended yet?

A damn shame that the Manziel's let one of JM's old high school friends, that's no more mature than JM at 20 yrs old, manage their son's PR.
Doesn't look like they had anything to do with it:
quote:
Fitch started "working" full-time, separating himself from the other friends who were content to remain Turtles. He wanted something more. This worried the Manziel family, whose unease about Fitch was palpable, even before word of the autographs. After the Aggies' trip to Oxford, Miss., Fitch told Michelle Manziel that he wanted to go to school at Ole Miss, and Michelle later joked that she'd fill out the application for him. In the summer, before the autograph stories began breaking, Michelle expressed hope that eventually Fitch would find his way out of her son's life, just as he found his way in.

Usually the NCAA gathers their own info during their investigation, they don't share their info with the school until they send them a letter of allegations. I'm sure aTm compliance is working to provide the NCAA with anything they ask for, and are being very diligent in assisting the process. But no one knows what the NCAA has gathered, not even aTm folks.
BTW, who leaked the info that there was a NCAA investigation anyway? Did aTm receive a letter from the NCAA? Or did espn/schatt throw this out for public consumption?
You'd have to think that the Manziel family had to know about a possible NCAA investigation when they agreed to do the ESPN Mag all access piece with Wrigth Thompson that was released last week......

Poor, Johnny. He wants to do what's right at all times, but these people just "find their way" into his life. He has no control over the amount of exposure they have to him. He's the victim. Always the victim. This fall - whenever it may be - is gonna be hard.

How many pages ago did I state that JFF has found his escape goat? The day after the first story broke.
Now we are seeing him becoming the bad guy here. Even ESPN2 is running a show on "who is uncle nate?"

JFF will walk, guilty or not

As far as I know, no... and they still haven't. At least they haven't said anything about it unless I just missed it.

The popular scuttlebutt is that the NCAA couldn't find enough information and leaked it to ESPN to stir the pot. That's just pure speculation, but it makes sense.

I dunno. I still can't make sense out of why they did that interview. Though the "it could come unraveled. And when it does, it's gonna be bad. Real bad." comment from dad makes more sense in that context.

According to the ESPNMag article.
Doesn't look like they had anything to do with it:

There is not a doubt in my mind that the NCAA did that shite in the Cecil Newton investigation, and they are doing that shite now with Manziel. NCAA investigators were shady arse characters over a decade ago, and they are still devious bastards today.

Thanks, missed that. And I sure don't want to defend that dysfunctional family, I just thought it was strictly a Johnny/Nate deal.
