And that's my cue.

When we joined the SEC, Delta had come in as a flight provider at Columbia Regional Airport, and offered flights to Memphis and Atlanta. For the teams that don't fly charter (football and men's basketball), they likely based their travel projections on these flights.
Then, that changed. Delta pulled out, and American Airlines is back in - it had to do with incentives, I believe. Only American offers flights to Dallas and Chicago, causing a lot more puddle jumping to get to SEC country. I'm guessing that had something to do with the budget being over.
The bus is fairly new, but I'm not sure when they got it.
Oh, and I should add - for fans, the travel distance to see games depends on where in Missouri you live. For example, down in southeast Missouri, they're closer to Oxford than to Columbia. For fans in St. Louis, they're now a fairly easy drive to Nashville, Oxford, and even Lexington; in the Big 12, we were the eastern-most school, so it was further for fans from the east part of the state to go to an away game. And the SEC has WAY better destinations.

UK no longer has this choppers for the hospital. Cost was way too expensive to run, they contract out the fleet they have for emergency runs.
Kentucky is lucky to have a major sugar daddy (RJ Corman) who donates his fleet of choppers and private jets to UK Athletics. But, UK does use Delta majority of the time for charter flights.

In my opinion, that was actually the funnest thing about realignment. I even watched the Pac10 plane making the rounds to the Texas schools and kansas during the first round of realignment.
I miss the fun times

There were issues with our charters a few times that involved certain non revenue teams being upgraded into regional jets instead of what was normally used (turboprops, I believe) that caused some unexpected increases in spending.
I can see that part but many times those charters in the SEC are same parent company so figured MU got the SEC rate. Columbia may not be close but with KC and STL seems like getting the charters would be easier and not harder. Did Mizzou bus more back in the Big 12?

I remember seeing a charter flight for volleyball to go to Florida and I'm pretty sure women's basketball did some charters too. I'm almost certain the volleyball charter was the one tigerboard was talking about Mizzou getting raked over the coals for after the small plane scheduled became unavailable. Either way, it's a small portion of the overage.
AA only flies ERJ145 jets into Columbia, which hold about 40 people, so I'd imagine they're at the mercy of demand when it comes to getting flights out of COU and probably wind up driving to STL or MCI for a lot of flights, which has got to be brutal.

Iowa State, kansas State, kansas, and probably Nebraska were all busable. I don't think there's anything really busable now except maybe Arkansas.

I have been on a few of those charters and they were not Delta. Flew out of TAC. Agree with you on our friend in Nicholasville as that is why Cal was able to get in and out when the job opened up. UK also has friends bigger than RJC but they stay out of view.

If I recall correctly from my aviation nerd message boards, most collegiate charters are with smaller airlines like Allegiant, Pinnacle, or North American.

I was thinking AR (both Fayetteville and Little Rock) and probably Oxford, Nashville, and Lexington. After that time makes more sense if you are not flying charter. The beauty of charter is no lag time and door to door save soo much time. For charter you can get to the airport like 5-10 min before plane takes off and not having to switch planes in an airport is great. Having a bus or car meet you at the plane is sweet too!
STL is a hub city correct? What about KC? That is why I am surprised you got raked over the coals. With lead time so far out you can book excess at better rates. The tough ones would be for like NCAA Final Four. Even bowls allow a month to set up the charter.

STL used to be a hub with TWA, but AA decimated the hub when they bought TWA out in favor of AA's ORD hub since they're so close. SWA has a pretty strong presence at STL, but given their non-hub setup I don't know if they do many direct flights to cities near SEC schools.
MCI hasn't been a hub since Braniff, and it's a good deal further from Mizzou than STL, even if KC itself is about the same distance. Not to mention driving to MCI for a flight to an SEC area would require flying back over Columbia for the most part.

It's so funny hearing the negative undertones to your posts when it comes to this stuff. Your baby bear FIP arse is so butthurt about not being in Big10.
Arkansas is most definitely bus-able if you're including all those Big12 schools. Same distance as many of those locations.

I said probably Nebraska and maybe Arkansas. They're about the same distance and the others I mentioned are much closer. Maybe grab a map.
Nice conjecture on the Big Ten thing though, be sure to throw a couple more Cubs connections in there next time.

Same thing happened to Cincy. It was a Delta hub and if they had a jet they could have it to LEX in like 15 - 20 min so you saw lots of Delta charters. With the hub gone so went easy access to Delta planes.

No, I was not suggesting driving bus to either KC or STL but having proximity for them to fly to Columbia with little time and less fuel than say having a charter originate in ATL for a flight with first pickup in Knoxville or Lexington.

Umm. If you're gonna drive to Aimes, Iowa, you're gonna drive to Fayetteville, Arkansas. I did grab a map. You can pretend to not have this negative undertone about being in the SEC, but it shines right through.

It's like your attendance comments, but more repetitive and less creative.

It's ok Mizzeaux, us folks in St. Louis just got kicked out of the state and told we should be part of Illinois on the Mizzou board.

At least you're being accurate. Maybe we should have included irrational in the description of STLers. People took a valid point that St. Louisans don't like to label themselves as Missourians like a bunch of children.
