If I'm not mistaken, OU was ahead of LSU in the polls before the conference championship games. Then LSU wins a close game against UT and OU spanks Mizzou. Then everyone on TV starts screaming for LSU. The human polls played a bigger factor than the VT game

I believe LSU was 7th when they played Tennessee and Oklahoma was 9th when they played Mizzou. OU's argument was that they manhandled the number one ranked team in their conference championship, whereas LSU had beaten the 14th ranked team by 7 points.

All told, even though VT was ranked ahead of LSU prior to the SEC Championship, the earlier win over VT as well as SOS is probably what caused LSU to leap to number 2.

All I'm saying is that the media helped LSU after all of the non bowl games were played. LSU deserved to go, but they, not OU, had the media's backing.

they did, and rightfully so (as you said). and most LSU fans will admit that

I think he is right Ross. Notre Dame can win their first game and break the top ten. It is amazing. I think they would have jumped OU.

If they were ranked in the preseason I could see it, but I just don't see it. Maybe its just me not wanting to admit I am wrong, but I just don't see it.

everything in this thread goes back to the 3 reasons to dislike a Bama fan.

I agree with you Ross. Notre Dame may benefit from some seriously unfair advantages...but if they were in Auburn's shoes with same ranking, no way they pass OU or USC.

I understand the treatment Notre Dame gets, but what grounds to you give in that season for leaving Oklahoma out? The reason Auburn was left out was low preseason ranking. Notre Dame wasn't even ranked in the preseason. I just don't see them making it even though they have a great name.

((This discussion will veer into the realm of uncertainty as soon as we attempt to analyze other realities, but here goes....))

Who says I'm leaving Oklahoma out? They would have probably played ND for the championship. Okay, we're considering the implications of an undefeated Notre Dame team's impact on the final rankings of 2004. To start with, an undefeated ND would have knocked off "actual" final poll #1 USC in the regular season, so they would not be a factor.
Auburn's Achile's Heel was not low preseason ranking, it was strength of schedule (Damn you The Citadel)Of course, Notre Dame's "undefeated season" disrupts the entire real season's strength of schedule, so there's no telling where Oklahoma or Auburn would have landed in that mix. You can be sure though that Notre Dame would have ROCKETED to the top of the rankings within the first five weeks of the season, whereas Auburn's rise was much slower. Notre Dame gets bonus points for being Notre Dame. I'm not saying its right, its just true.

I can, however, safely assume that neither "real season" undefeated Utah or undefeated Boise State would have made it in any scenario.

Oh crap, I forgot Notre Dame would knock off #1 USC. That throws my entire argument out of whack. But tell me, are we still saying Auburn goes undefeated along with Notre Dame?

and what reasons are those?

reason number 1 is busted because no one has made any excuses.

reason number 2 is ridiculous anyways. Since when does any team stop talking smack?

reason number 3 was busted by myself with the only fact being that auburn has beaten alabama more in the past 30 years.

Ross: Like it or not but a Bama/USC or ND/USC would have been a more attractive match up for the voters and media. ND always gets whatever they want! The media is always talking about Bama, good or bad, which shows that Bama is and always will be a popular name. It's all speculation anyhow so there's really no reason to argue about what could have or would have been.

I'm not taking anything away from y'all because under Tubby, AU has been great and will probably continue to be a very good program.

let's assume that the "almighty power" that is Notre Dame doesnt play USC that year.

Undefeated Auburn got left out.
You're saying undefeated Notre Dame plays for NC?

Yeah, I'm assuming that Utah, Boise State, Auburn and Oklahoma still go undefeated, along with Notre Dame. I personally think Notre Dame would have been sitting pretty at the #1 spot while Auburn and Oklahoma would still be fighting in the media over who should be #2. The deciding factor would again have been strength of schedule and pollsters opinion.

I didn't even think of that so I guess if ND had beaten USC, then they would have been matched up with OU in the title game.

Now its even more certain that Auburn would be left out. I assume that USC still goes undefeated, since they didn't play Notre Dame in this fantasy year. So that leaves Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn with undefeated seasons? Where do you see Auburn on that list? I see 'em looking in from the outside with Boise and Utah....
