Technically nobody had the ball when the whistle was blown. The VT guy muffed the punt. The last team to possess the ball on that play was Arkansas, when the punter held it. Seems like that is what came into play.

The color guy was arguing for Arkansas to get the ball. After they get the ball, he says it should be VT ball.

There was not a "fumble," so the rule allowing to see who recovers after an early blown whistle is not applicable.

According to the TV guys, the rule was changed to allow the refs to overrule an inadvertent whistle to avoid a situation like this on review. They got confirmation from the production crew that this is the current rule.
