Still love the guy and am forever grateful for what he did for our program while he was our coach. But that's just one gripe I have against him.

Don't blame you there. If only he'd had Sam Cunningham run up and down the field on him a few times... you never know.

Those games were more of an effort for Bama's backwards redneck fanbase and boosters to allow Bryant to sign black players.

He had been recruiting them for years, usually helping place them in school's up north far away from Bama's schedule.

Don't kid yourself, Dale; we were all redneck and backwards as shite in the 50s and 60s, but you're correct save for one point: He would have been going up against the political establishment more so than the fans and boosters.

I won't argue this. Bryant was every bit as shrewd as he was a skilled coach.

The political backlash would have declined greatly after the early-mid 60s.

What the SC games did for Bryant was show that once Bama stepped out of their weak SEC schedule, they had a hard time competing nationally with an all white squad, meaning the "why recruit them? We don't need them to win" argument was put to rest and the social acceptance replaced the argument.

It isn't like he pulled a Rupp and recruited a black player, but retired before he ever coached him.

Perhaps, but some people seem to believe that Bryant could have simply handed down a fiat and, as a result, black students and athletes would have been summarily ushered in... and that might have been the case had it happened in 1978 or 1979.

In 1970, however, Bryant wasn't yet so entrenched as a living legend within the state that he could have pulled this off. He needed a practical example, which is where Cunningham came in...

Also, there was the subsequent creeping over to see Darrell Royal to gain the forbidden powers of the wishbone, only to turn right around and use them to push John McKay's shite in.

I legit laughed out loud at that.

For those who've never read it, here is an article which the LA Times ran in 2000 on the integration issue and USC's role in it.

A good -- if old -- read.

quote: The only thing I hold against Vaught is he refused to recruit black players. And that is one reason we fell so far behind talent wise He was a product of the times in which he lived. Not to make excuses or anything, but I've always had a really hard time judging someone with decades of hindsight. Johnny was Johnny. Sure, it would have been nice if he'd learned the lesson Bryant learned about recruiting black players, or if Bryant had been able to impart that lesson to Vaught but what can you do?

Vaught had a better winneing Pct and more bowl wins than Bear did when Vaught retired. Bear's years coaching after JV had the heart attack is when he passed Vaught.

Who's to say Vaught wouldn't have changed had he stayed? Bear only had a handful of Black players when JV retired.
